After a courageous battle with cancer, it is with great sadness that our family announces the passing of Brent Dryden on December 29, 2014. Beloved husband and best friend to Janine Dryden. Loving father to Miles, Jeremy, Courtney and Jesse. Will be missed by his parents John and Gayle. Survived by his brother John and his wife Christine and their kids Darren and Jessica. Predeceased by his sister Adrienne and survived by his niece Nicole. Friends will be received by the family on Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where a Celebration of Brent’s Life will take place on Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place. A special thanks to all the staff on “C4” at Juravinski. Forever grateful to Jen Wiernikowski for being our guardian angel throughout our journey. Lethbridge, Roy – November 1, 1929 – December 31, 2014, in his 86th year, Roy passed away peacefully in his sleep at Hamilton General Hospital. A loving husband to his late wife of 59 years, Lorna (nee Pounder, 2010), a proud father to his three children Sharon, Rick and Suzanne. Adoring and adored Grandfather to Tim, Jesse and Chelsea, and great-grandchildren Katelyn and her little brother (due February 2015). Much loved by many nieces, nephews, relatives, close family friends and friends from afar. Predeceased by his older brother Harold, older brother Ken and younger brother Barry. Roy will be sorely missed by his family, friends and co-workers he met during his 43 years at Gillies-Guy and his home life of 60+ years in Greensville. He was a kind hearted, honest, hardworking man who would do anything for anybody. He loved the north country and his second home on Deer Lake in South River. He volunteered for the Red Cross for many years after his retirement. Roy could put a smile on anybody’s face and made friends with everybody he met. To celebrate his life, friends will be received by the family on Friday afternoon from 12:00 noon until the time of Roy’s Service at 1:00 p.m. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Cremation has taken place. Interment at White Chapel Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donation to the Red Cross or the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA in honour of his memory.

Burley, George Edward – Passed away peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on Monday, December 29, 2014. Predeceased by his wife Anne of 68 years. Dearly loved and remembered always by his daughters Pat, Sharon (Al), Diane (Rob) and Gail (Eric); 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren and brother Ken (Laurie). Predeceased by his daughter Cindy and sisters Marg, Betts, Lil and Doris. Friends will be received by the family on Friday evening from 7-9 at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where George’s Service will take place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Cremation to follow. Jim passed away on Monday December 22, 2014 at the Hamilton General Hospital, at the age of 86 years, after a long struggle with the many problems related to sleep apnoea. He is lovingly remembered by wife Betty (Moffat, Angold), daughter Anne (Kevin Jones) and their daughter Laura, son John and his sons Max and Spencer, stepson Alan Angold (Cari), and their children Jordan (Lee), Brittany, Hayley and Zachary. Also missed by sister Mary Hunt, brothers-in-law Don Moffat (Jane), Bill Moffat (Judi), Ian Moffat and several nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his parents Thelma and Gordon Bechtel, sisters Isobel Butcher, Jean Kelly, and brothers-in-law Jim Butcher, Bruce Hunt and Chuck Kelly. Jim was a valued employee for many years at Proctor and Gamble. During that time he also pursued a career in singing. Formal training began at an early age and he advanced to study with Celia Bizony, George Lambert and Dr. Gladys Whitehead. His magnificent voice was enjoyed by audiences in Hamilton, across Canada, in the UK and France. He was a leading interpreter of oratorical music in Canada and was also in demand as a recitalist. Jim was the bass baritone soloist at Melrose United Church for over forty years. He was a regular and favourite soloist at the Bach Elgar Choral Society, The John Laing Singers, Musica Gloria, Te Deum Concerts and the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra. Considered to be the leading bass soloist in Hamilton, he was much loved and admired by his fellow performers. Other interests included woodworking, making beautiful furniture and toys, renovating family homes, volunteering, travelling with Betty and with choirs. He endeared himself to many with his warmth, caring, friendly charm, wit, and his rotten puns. Cremation has taken place. In the spring we hope to celebrate Jim’s life with a musical gathering. This will be announced in the paper prior to the event.

Suddenly at the Juravinski Hospital on Monday, December 22, 2014 in her 85th year. Survived by her loving husband Joseph, her cherished daughters Susan and Joanne (Joseph). Also sadly missed by her sister Laura Campbell, and her brothers Edwin Gillespie Marks and Frederick Marks. Fondly remembered by her grandchildren Catharine, Michael, Brad, and Alana and great-grandchildren Aiden, Talan and Faolan as well as step-grandchildren Joey, Robyn (Mike), Saige, Alex, Emily, Anthony, Evan and many nieces and nephews. Friends will be received by the family on Saturday December 27th 2014 from 1 p.m. until the Celebration of Catherine’s Life at 3 p.m. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Well-known and much-loved artist and volunteer, December 23, 1925 to December 21, 2014. Our mother, grandmother and great-mother passed away at St. Joseph’s Villa in Dundas 2 days before her 89th birthday. Mary was born in Sydney Australia to Norman and Frances Schooley, sister to John and Patricia. Mary often said that her mother was a mad Irishwoman who moved the family many times, stopping in Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal, finally ending up in London Ont. There Mary attended Brescia College, UWO, met her husband Nate, a young medical student, and married in 1945. They moved to Chatham and spent many rich years there, raising 5 children together in a close supportive neighbourhood. Nate and Mary believed in fostering a love of art and culture in their children, and did so at every opportunity, taking the whole family traveling, touring art galleries and museums and eating in great restaurants. Nate taught us fairness and generosity by example, and Mary creativity and compassion. When Nate retired from the Public General Hospital in Chatham, they moved to Dundas where they spent many hours exploring the Bruce Trail and conservation areas, and where Mary discovered the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). Mary will be sadly missed by her children Stephen (Betty) of Hamilton, Paul (Beth) of London, Andrew of Toronto, Christine (Jacquie) of Nova Scotia. Her grandchildren Jillian (Colin), Brendan, Christopher (Michelle Mann) and Michelle were very dear to her, and her great-grandchildren Grace, Ian and Claire brought her great delight in her final years. Their visits always prompted big smiles. She was predeceased by her parents, brother and sister, husband Nate, son Peter and grandson Brendan, losses which affected her deeply. In times of adversity, Mary sought refuge in her faith in God and immersed herself in her artwork. An artist from a young age, Mary worked in clay, watercolour, inks and dyes and pastels. She had many exhibitions, including a successful retrospective “Transformations” in Sept 2002 and the last major show of her work “Mary Toplack…and the world around me” in July 2010, both at the Dofasco Gallery DVSA. She received several awards and honourable mentions. She loved painting outdoors in her beloved Dundas Valley “dominated wherever one looks by the escarpment in all its moods” with several landscape artist friends. “My landscapes…are a result of direct interaction between myself and the world around me…sun, wind, insects, wildlife and lots of fresh air.” She described her abstract paintings as celebrating “ease of movement, grace, almost flight…a direct result of my battle with arthritis…I now ‘dance’ only in my work”. Mary enthusiastically promoted the arts. She was a charter member of the Thames Art Gallery Board in Chatham, wrote the weekly Arts Column for the Chatham Daily News from 1972-76, was founding member of the DVSA Alumni Association, Curator of the MUMC Gallery from 1988-96, member of the “On The Edge” environmental painters group, past president of the Hamilton Women’s Art Association, contributing member of the Carnegie Gallery, Hamilton & Region Arts Council, Central Ontario Art Association and Hamilton Artists Inc. Her contributions were acknowledged by nominations for Woman of the Year (Arts) and Dundas Citizen of the Year. She received the L’Escarbot Pin a federal award for contributions to the arts in 1992 and the first annual Carnegie Medallion in 1994. Mary spent countless hours at the DVSA, her home away from home, learning, studying and working alongside Maria Ferretti-Perrins (both of them tirelessly) on successful Art Auctions, Estate Sales and Art in the Yard. Her enthusiasm was infectious, spurring the involvement of many family members. Mary made friends wherever she went, developing warm connections in Ontario, Nova Scotia, Ireland, the Azores and beyond. Mary was a woman of great faith and lover of life-long learning. “My education is not in my background. It is a living, breathing part of my everyday life and very much in the foreground”. Her humour and wit shone through to the end. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and community. We extend our heartfelt thanks to the staff of Rose Garden, St. Joseph’s Villa and to Dr. Michael West for showing Mary much kindness and care. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received by the family on Sunday December 28th from 2-4 pm & 6-8 pm. at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. A Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, December 29th at 11:30 am at ST. JOSEPH’S VILLA CHAPEL, 56 Governor’s Rd. Dundas, with a reception to follow at the Villa. Mary wanted friends and family to assemble joyously to celebrate her well-lived and long life. In lieu of flowers, Mary asked that donations be made to her beloved Dundas Valley School of Art. A celebration of her life will be held at the DVSA at a later date.

Peacefully passed away at the Georgian Retirement Residence on Wednesday December 17, 2014 in her 89th year, predeceased by her husband Ross (1984). Loving mother of Judy (John Newitt), Ross (Michelle Pitt), Grandmother of Jasmine and Scott Prygiel, Andrew Newitt, Kevin and Roni Newitt (Pollington), Amy Newitt (Anthony Frisina), Jacob Aitcheson(Victoria Beal), Great Grandmother/Nana of Silvaira Newitt and Celine Prygiel. Survived by her brother Thomas Wilson. Cremation has taken place with a family service and interment in Dundas at a later date. Special thanks to the staff of the Georgian Retirement Residence for all the comfort provided to Gwen in her final years. Buss , William (“Bill”) Henry Patrick – passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, December 11, 2014 in his 87th year. He has joined his wife Stephanie (‘Stella”) who passed away in 2010. Bill has been a life-long resident of Hamilton and retired from Canadian Liquid Air in 1993, after 26 years. Bill has always enjoyed life and in his past few years was passionate, to say the least, in trying to conquer the slot machines at the various casinos in the area. Bill is survived by his children Debbie Trebych, Cathy Bent, Brad Buss and David Buss. He is a proud grandfather of Todd, Geoff, Mellisa, Alicia, Connor, Harrison, Jesse and Jacob. In addition he is a great- grandfather for Storm, Autum, Nathalie, Lucas, Alex and James. Survived by his brother Doug Buss, his sister Elsie Robinson and predeceased by his sister Helen Garton. Bill and Stella have left an amazing legacy of family to continue the next generations and were very proud of all the kids. As we all know, Bill was not a fan of formality and sadness. As such he has been cremated and no formal service will be held. He asked for a celebration of life to be held. As such we invite all family and friends to join us to share a drink and a fun story to celebrate his life. The event will be held on Friday, December 19, 2014 from 4pm to 7pm at Flamboro Downs, 967 Highway #5 Dundas, upstairs in the Confederation Room. He will be thrilled that you joined us and even more if you win on one of his favorite slot machines. Dress is casual and only happy memories please.
