March 15, 1932 – September 15, 2015
Drury (nee Abbey), (Marilyn) Joan – Peacefully, surrounded by the love and support of her family, (Marilyn) Joan Drury passed away in her 84th year, on September 15, 2015. Beloved wife for 59 years of Douglas Drury, whose death preceded her own by exactly two months to the day. Loving mother of Kathryn Drury, David Drury (Cathy), and Jim Drury (Sheila). Grandmother to Meaghan, Alison, Spencer, Carolyn, Kaitlyn, Tyler, Hilary, Erin, Turner, and Clare. She will be forever remembered by her sister, Susan Abbey Sherman, her brother, Jim Abbey (Bette), her brother-in-law, Bill Drury (Betty), and sister-in-law Jean Wilson (Roger). Joan will be especially missed by lifelong friends Joan Luchak and Marilyn McKeeman. Joan truly enjoyed her time as Executive Director of the McNab Street YWCA in Hamilton and later as a dedicated employee at the Dundas Valley School of Art (DVSA). She spent time in her retirement volunteering with the DVSA Annual Art Auction and helping out at St. Mark’s United Church. Special thanks to Ali and Tyler, Joan’s nurses, and all of the wonderful, kind staff at St. Peter’s Hospital. Cremation has taken place. Friends and family are invited to a funeral service in honour of Joan at St. Mark’s United Church, 1 Lynndale Drive, Dundas, ON at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 19. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Peter’s Hospital, DVSA or St. Mark’s United Church in Dundas
Kathryn, David, Jimmy and your wonderful family.
We are so very sorry to hear of Aunt Joan’s passing. She has always been so kind to us and we will miss her. We hope you can have some peace in that she is back holding hands with dear uncle Doug. Obviously they were truly meant to be together for all eternity. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
My Dear Kathryn,
We are so saddened to hear of your great loss. May you and your families find some small comfort during this unfortunate time in your lives.
Our deepest condolences,
Karen Broadbent and Dave McWilliams
Very sorry to hear of Joan’s passing so soon after Dan. Many fond memories come to mind when thinking of Dan and Joan. My Father Cliff and Dan took turns car pooling to P&G……We also rented 2 cottages in Southampton owned by Gertrude Turnbull for a week at the beach. I live in Kincardine now and often find myself driving past those old cottages.
Please accept our deepest sympathies.
Our thoughts and prayers to all of you. Joan was so proud of you all. Grateful to have had the time with her these past few months. We will not be returning home for her service but will think of her and Douglas together again as we explore the Alleghenys. She would have liked that.
Jim, Sheila and family,
We are sending our warmest condolences in the loss of your parents (grandparents). I know this is a difficult time as you grieve and celebrate their lives but we wanted you to know we were thinking of you.
Sad she left so soon, but glad she is not in pain. I will always remember her laugh and giggles. A wonderful lady.
My deepest condolences to the family.
Joan was very kind and it was an honour to know her. She has now joined the love of her life for eternity.
Our deepest condolences to Kathryn, David and Jimmy and your families. Aunt Joan will be missed by all.
A lovely lady, steady support of DVSA. I am glad to have worked with her and Bette during my happy term there.
Joan was a friendly, classy lady and she will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family on the loss of your Mom.
My Mom and Dad (Joan & Alex Dempster) send their condolences as well.
Very sad news. I have been a volunteer at DVSA with Joan for many years and always found her to be a very helpful and sincere person. She will be missed. My condolenses to her family at this sad time.
Our deepest sympathies in this most difficult of times. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family.
We write this note to express our sadness of your loss. The passing away of the matriarch of your family and the loss of both members in such a short duration creates a heavy burden to carry. The whole Coull family offer our sympathy and look forward to joining you at the memorial service honoring her life.
Dear Kathryn, David and Jimmy,
I was so sorry to hear about your Mom. She was a wonderful lady.
My thoughts and prayers are with you now.
Sincerely, Sue xxx
Kathryn,David and Jim,
I was so sorry to learn of your father’s death in the summer when we were away at our cottage in Temagami with no access to Internet and then to come home and read of Joan’s death. I was very involved with the YWCA in Hamilton when Joan was the executive Director of the MacNab street Y. I always enjoyed my contact with her . My husband John and I also enjoyed talking with Doug and Joan at the fitness programme at McMaster where we both went every week. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Joan was a wonderful presence as you entered Dundas Valley School of Art. She was always helpful and kind. I was glad to know her and proud to call her my friend. She will be missed.
So sorry for your loss. You are going through a devastating time. I miss seeing Joan at school, but have lots of pleasant memories.
