It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of William in his 90th year. He led a long, rich and beautifully lived life that touched so many people in so many positive ways. His final weeks were spent at St. Josephs Hospital Hamilton on Internal Medicine and then St. Peters Hospital Palliative Care Unit. He became well recognized by all of his caregivers for his spirit, hard work and determination to get better and to regain his strength. He never gave up. The family wishes to sincerely thank all of the staff for the wonderful care that they provided and for their kindness and compassion. We will be forever grateful. We also wish to thank all of the staff and caregivers at Amica Dundas, especially Dr. Sam Macaluso, for their kindness and support. William loved his Amica community and it was a wonderful place to spend his final months. He became a well known character there going to his exercise classes and socializing in the Bistro. William was born in Dundas, Ontario and was the last surviving son, one of five boys, of James Frederick (Fred) Dobson and Nellie (McToal) Dobson. He loved his brothers Gordon, Tom, Edgar and his identical twin Robert and he worked hard over the years to keep the family close and in touch despite being widely separated across the country. He is survived by his beloved wife Donna (Grieveson) Dobson, son Gregory, daughter-in-law Caroline, granddaughters Sarah and Olivia, sister-in-law Mary, nieces Carol, Ginny and Nancy and nephews Rick, Andrew, William and Fred. He grew up in Dundas and was proud of it. The son of a machinist in Bertrams factory he developed a strong work ethic. He loved riding horses in the beautiful countryside around Dundas and practising his marksmanship with his twin Bob. After spotting a beautiful red haired girl in church in Dundas he knew then that he wanted Donna to be his bride. Their wonderful marriage of 64 years began in 1956. His undying love and dedication to Donna never faltered and was still strong right until the end. During his long illness his only concern was for her wellbeing. She meant everything to him. After starting a successful career with the Royal Bank in Toronto the family moved frequently all across Canada. Although at times it was difficult, he embraced the changes and new experiences and always quickly made new friends and community connections. People were drawn to his good nature, humility and genuine interest in the lives of others. As an example of how highly he was regarded, while in Manitoba he was presented with an eagle feather from an indigenous chief. This is a very high honour and he valued it tremendously. In fact, he then became known to the family as Soaring Eagle! One of his favorite things was to ride a horse in the Rocky Mountains with his family. To soar in the high country. He lived an active, engaged and healthful life including becoming an accomplished equestrian, a runner, an expert skier, golfer, outdoorsman and a musician in several bands. He was a committed member of the Presbyterian church and devoted much time to charity work such as riding for the disabled. His wonderful storytelling at social gatherings became legendary and was always done with a great sense of humour. He had a great sense of style and took much pride in always looking very sharp. The character traits that come to mind when we remember William include his gentleness, commitment, faithfulness, honesty, integrity, a lifelong learner, hard worker, determination and warmth to name just a few. He was a true gentleman. He genuinely appreciated every day on this earth and was grateful for everything that came his way. His glass was always half full even during the most challenging times. This was always a source of inspiration for the family. We will all miss him terribly. Cremation has taken place and his wishes were for a small service with family and a few friends. In view of the Covid-19 restrictions and uncertainty a specific date has yet to be chosen. After fighting many good fights, Michael Kiely peacefully passed away at home surrounded by family. Beloved husband of Margaret (Duffy) for 48 years, who stoically and lovingly cared for and supported Michael in sickness and in health. Cherished father to Sean, Michelle (Jason), and Paul (Melissa). Adored by grandchildren Claire, William, Kieran and Aidan. Treasured brother of Moira (John), Gerry (Lynn), Sean (Karen), Rita (Andrew), John David and John Peter. Michael will live forever in the hearts of all his family and friends. He was a long time employee of the HWCDSB as a teacher and consultant. In his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as traveling to Ireland and Florida. He received excellent care, with a special acknowledgement to Dr. Julie Emili, Dr. Carolyn Levis, and numerous wonderful home care nurses. Cremation has taken place. Friends will be received by the family on Monday afternoon or evening from 2-4 or 7-9 by phoning the funeral home at 905-628-6412 or signing up online at https://signup.com/go/ipTAoru to attend visitation. 1919 – 2020
Very few people live a life that spans a century, but we knew that she was ready to go. It’s just hard for those of us who are left to turn the page. Born in Hamilton, Dorothy also lived in Deep River and Ottawa, but the Dundas/Hamilton area was where she considered to be her home. She left the Hamilton area in 2008 after her husband (John B. McDougall) of close to 70 years died and moved up to Ottawa where she died at Granite Ridge Community Care on August 4, 2020 after a long illness. Those who are left to mourn include her daughter Valerie Carey of Espanola, grandchildren Ian Carey (and wife Terra and daughter Abbie) of Niagara Falls and Heather Carey (and partner Richard Fournier and children Willow and Hunter) of Spanish, sister Gail Brooks of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, and several generations of nieces and nephews. Her parents (Edward and Bessie Pitcher) and brother (Fred Pitcher) predeceased her. She was a member of Dundas Baptist Church for over 60 years. As the church was very important to her, we would ask that donations in her memory be made to Dundas Baptist Church. With great sadness we announce the passing of Peter on 31 July, 2020 due to complications from dementia. Left to mourn are his wife Michele (nee Fleming), sisters Mary (Jake) Warkentin, Martha (Syd) Traikowsky, and brother John (Marilyn). Also all of Michele’s sisters and brothers and their spouses who loved Peter dearly, many nieces and nephews and especially nephew Ryan VanSickle who with his Uncle Peter enjoyed the odd G&T on the balcony. Predeceased by first wife Jean (Miller), daughter Janice, brother Jacob (Susan), sister Aganetha Andrews (John). Peter had a great life doing what he loved. A career military man (1958 – 1990) serving first with the Provost Corp. One day after crawling on a tank he decided he would rather do that so remustered to the Armour Corp. serving with various regiments in Canada, Germany and UN tours in Cyprus and the Middle East. Peter retired as a member of the 8th Canadian Hussars. Peter made many great friends in the military which he maintained to this day. Peter was an active man who played golf and curled for many years and was an avid hunter and fisherman. His go to in the fall every year was hunting with the Indian River Hunt Club gang. Peter’s best time was our move to “The Pennerosa” a 100 acre piece of heaven we moved to on our posting to Trenton in 1988. He thrived there planting a big garden, making the best wine for miles around, cutting wood, grass and ploughing snow. Making the sweet, sticky taste of spring in maple syrup was another one of Peter’s talents. He loved going across the road in the morning to Trillium Ridge Sugar Bush and cooking sap. Another passion at this time was raising champion beagles. Trips to Hare and Fox trials were plenty and more great friendships were forged. Peter’s years lived on Maple Sugar Road were his best times and so many friends there still. Peter’s other great passion was being a Mason. He was Master of Deseronto Lodge and District Deputy Grand Master of Prince Edward County 1996-97. Peter went through Scottish and York Rite rituals to become a Master Mason. Once that was accomplished the next step was to become a Shriner which he did in 1992 and enjoying the friends and fundraising there became club president in 2008 and past Commander Legion of Honour for Rameses 2008. It is hard to sum up the great man Peter was in this small space. He will be missed so much. We send him to the “Great Architecture of the Universe” with much love and hugs. August 18, 1949 – July 23, 2020
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Douglas Bruce Rice after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be deeply missed by his wife Nancy, daughters Alanna (Chris Rowe), Sarah Lindeman, Amanda (Vanni Boetto) and cherished grandsons Julian and Cristian. Doug is predeceased by his parents Lorne and Betty Rice and brother Jeff (Carol). He is survived by his sister Carolyn Komaromi and many nieces and nephews.
Doug worked for CIBC for 35 years largely in Hamilton and Toronto. He retired from his role of Regional Director of Private Banking in 2004 to enjoy time with his family and to pursue his favourite past -time of golf. Doug was happiest outdoors hiking with his family, walking the beach in Florida, kayaking among the mangroves on the Indian River and exploring the world. He has given us many funny stories and ‘Dougisms’ which we hope to share at a memorial next spring when the Covid restrictions are lifted and we can truly celebrate together as Doug would have wanted. He was outgoing, boisterous, and full of life and he will be missed and remembered every day. As per Doug’s wishes cremation has taken place. December 2, 1965 – July 19, 2020
aka Birdie lover of life and laughter died Sunday, July 19 in her 55th year. Self proclaimed favourite child of Gladys and Roy. Deeming herself the best sibling, she was a crazy silly sister to Michael, Patricia, Tracie and Shawn. The family did however concur she was the most amazing, caring Aunt to Dan, Chris, Justice and Sibylle. A fun loving humorous woman, she worked for the CRA making taxes fun, no easy accomplishment. Her favourite pastime was eating and hanging out with her wide circle of friends and making them laugh mostly in wildly inappropriate ways (just ask them). Although a good eater, she was not a good cook, often using the home smoke detector as her oven timer. She loved coca-cola but it didn’t love her as she was diabetic. She also loved bingo but only when she won (an embarrassment for Patricia who went with her). Her middle finger was the finger she liked the most as she used it often (a sense of pride for Michael who taught and encouraged her in this behaviour). Her only regret was not becoming a stand up comic because she said she likes to sit too much. No viewing or funeral services will be held because Colleen believed in laughing not crying. Although a celebration of Colleen’s life will be held at a later date, after her “cry baby” sister Tracie stops crying. Colleen touched many throughout her memorable life and will be greatly missed by all.

Al was a born educator who through his profession with the HWDSB strove to ignite a love for learning in students. Upon retirement he pursued his hobbies of golf, fishing, curling, skiing and riding his motorcycle. Al easily engaged anyone he met in conversation. He was a Past Master of the Lodge of Strict Observance. He loved and was loved by his wife Brenda. Al’s pride and joy were his children Rick (Jackie) and Donna (Buck). Memory maker and adored Grandpa of his grandchildren Reilly, Jake, Trevor, Jessica, Shaelyn, Ainslie and Connor. He will be mourned by his sister Lee (Michael) Creal, brother Norm (Emma) Kunc, brother-in-law Jim (Mary) Grandy and his nephews and nieces. Brother-in-law of Wanda and Peter Olsen. Al’s circle of friends reached far and wide and his presence will be missed. A heartfelt thank you to the team of healthcare workers who guided and cared for Al with compassion and always gave us hope. To our friends and neighbours who supported us – when days were dark you brought us into the light. A private celebration of Al’s well lived life will be held. After a courageous battle with cancer, Bill, of Greensville, passed away on Canada Day with his family by his side. Cremation has taken place. Respecting Bill’s wishes, there will be no service. Many thanks to Bill’s healthcare team.
