August 11, 1951 – May 6, 2020
Kidney, David Edward – On Wednesday May 6th, David Kidney was suddenly and unexpectedly called home to meet his Savior. He loved his family dearly; his wife Gloria, his 2 sons Jesse and Matt, and his two daughters-in-law Tiffany and Jen. Madison and Brooke, his 2 beautiful granddaughters were the pride of his life. He was born in Hamilton to Joyce and Ed Kidney in 1951. David was the eldest of 3 brothers, Alan (Helen), who now lives in Red Deer Alberta, and Stephen, now in Wainfleet. As a graduate of the McMaster Fine Arts Programme, David had a lifelong interest in the arts. His other passion was music. Playing the guitar was a daily habit and writing songs a favoured pastime. David’s joy in the Lord deeply impacted his family in Christ at Bethany Gospel Chapel where he was an elder. He was involved in the Dundas community through coaching baseball, soccer and hockey when the boys were young. As Director of Classroom Services at McMaster for 40 years, he was involved in many aspects of campus life and he sat on several professional committees including OUETDA where he had many friends and colleagues. David’s Service will be live streamed from Turner Family Funeral Home on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at https://livestream.com/accounts/14938408/davidkidney. Cremation has taken place.
*The livestream link will be available to re-watch the service for 4 weeks after the day of service
David’s sense of humour always brought smiles to our faces. Always the good neighbour. It was a privilege to know David, Gloria and their extended family.
A big part of my life is missing although l know he is with his Lord and Saviour. Even though l rarely spoke to David l recorded videos in my mind that l will cherish forever. Will look forward to touching base with David when it is my turn to stand before the White Throne of Judgement. Miss you David.
Dear Tiffany & Jesse, I am so sorry for the loss of your Dad prayers for you, your Mom, and families

Dave was a brother to me in high school; lots of laughs, great conversations, mutual interest in art and music. We performed as a folk duet with all kinds of covers and originals. It was always a pleasure to hear a new tune and work out how we could present it. As we grew our paths diverged. However, in all the intervening years whenever we met up it was like meeting a family member again in that all the time apart vanished. He was still Dave and we could just pick up without skipping a beat. I’m so happy to know that he married Gloria, a truly wonderful person, and that they had such fine sons who gifted him and Gloria with grandchildren. My heart aches for their loss. He introduced to the Blind Faith song ‘In the Presence of the Lord’ and it rings in my head as I think of him there.
David was a very good neighbour and friend. We send our prayers and love to Gloria and her family. We will all miss him. He is up in heaven with the Lord and is praying for us all. God bless you. Love, Carol, John and family.
Remembering David from our days at Delta High School. I especially remember our graduation dance/night where a good time was had by all. As well during first year at Mac I asked him to design a float for Moma’s Pizza Parlour for the Homecoming Parade. Talented and imaginative guy. My memories are getting a bit faded by Dave stands out. From reading his obit his life on earth was good and will be remembered.
David was always a kind and helpful person who you did not hesitate to ask questions of. I teach at McMaster University and as we became more and more technological, David was there to help facilitate us in our work. He was always generous with his time and energy and I for one, very much appreciated his sense that we were his academic family and he cared.
I knew David as a colleague at McMaster University. Although I didn’t know him nearly long enough, he was always a gentleman and highly respected member of the McMaster Library staff. He was one of those people nobody had a bad word to say about and he was greatly missed upon his retirement. It is a reflection of David’s life that he was, and will be, so dearly missed by those who loved him and knew him. God’s speed friend.
To Gloria and to all of David’s family, please accept my sincerest condolences on your loss. David was a long-time customer and friend here at Records On Wheels and we will miss his friendship, humour and kindness. It was always a pleasure talking to David about the many artists and styles of music that were his passion.
My deepest condolences to Gloria and family.
I met Dave through the Media Director’s of Ontario. We hit it off immediately. We worked on several organizations together over the years. I met his beautiful wife Gloria at some of our annual dinners. He had her on a pedestal which was so beautiful. He will be missed.
Please accept my sincerest condolences on your loss.
David was a long-time friend.
I have Known David through the University Media Directors of Ontario where we would meet twice a year.
My thoughts and Prayers are with the family.

Dear Gloria and family. We were so sorry to hear of David’s sudden passing. It is such a loss for you and the boys. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. Ray & Alison Murphy
I met Dave at my first OUETDA meeting many years ago. Dave was immediately welcoming and made me feel I was part of the team. Today, many of the ideas he proposed became the standard by which Ontario university classrooms were equipped. Tens of thousands of students can trace at least some of their success to Dave’s work.
I will always remember an evening drink after a long day of meetings when the OUETDA group got together to tell stories. We laughed till we cried. Dave could hardly contain his laughter, and his laughter was infectious. And that is how I will always remember him, with a big grin on his face and a twinkle in his eye. Rest well, friend
Gloria,
So sorry to hear of David’s passing. I can clearly remember seeing him walking home from McMaster, at the end of the day.
My deepest condolences to you and your family at this sad time.

Dear Gloria and Family,
David was a wonderful man and example of fatherhood. I admired him and your family. I have so many memories of David singing and playing guitar, it was so obvious that music was a true passion. He will be missed.
Saddened to hear about Dave, Gloria. It was always a pleasure to work with him (and Kevin); they always came through over our 37 years of toiling in the trenches. So easy to talk to and work with. A solid citizen and fun to be with. I’ll let Alex know, although he never met him.
Gloria and family,
So sorry to hear of David’s passing. Thinking of you all during this difficult time.

I met Dave though the Media Directors of Ontario. I had the pleasure of travelling together with him to several meetings around the province. I enjoyed the travel time very much. I have very fond memories of Dave’s sense of humour and stories.
Dave was always willing to share from his knowledge and experience. I will miss him.
Our sincerest condolences to you all at this time. I have fond memories of Dave as he and I teamed up as Best Man and Maid of Honour for Jim and Sue McWilliam forty plus years ago. Gloria and family,
So very sorry for your loss. You are in my thoughts and prayers.
Keeping you all in our hearts and prayers.

My condolences to Gloria and family. I originally met Dave through the OUETDA, he had so much to share with us. A consummate professional but an even better person. We also worked together at AMTEC which meant traveling to other cities in Canada. Fondly remember the evening when we took in a Hamilton Bulldogs vs. Manitoba Moose hockey game in Winnipeg. He always thoroughly enjoyed life, and had a tremendous sense of humour. He will be sadly missed, but not forgotten.
I hope you can feel the love and support of all who are with you virtually, and wishes they could support you in person, especially at the service…. Our condolences from Rob &Dora-Ann
I knew David since McMaster as students and work colleagues. He was always funny, kind, slightly mischievous and good hearted.
I will miss our talks at Fortinos.
Gloria, I am so sorry .
So thankful to have been given the opportunity to join with the Kidney family as they remember David’s life today. May you all feel God’s comforting presence at this time.
I feel fortunate to have met and worked with David. He was a kind and caring individual who made it his work to connect people and build communities. I still marvel at his musical talent and knowledge; he had the best stories and advice to share about musicians.
Gloria,
We are so saddened at the sudden loss of David.
We will always remember our Mediterranean cruise and the wonderful times we spent with David and you. We feel blessed to have met him and you.
David’s celebration service was very moving and helped us know him a bit better.
Please accept our heartfelt condolences.

David was a wonderful colleague and will be greatly missed. Thank you to David’s family for hosting his funeral in such a way that brought us in close so we could all say goodbye to such a wonderful man.
Debbie and I just watched the live-stream of David’s funeral and our hearts were with you the whole time. We both have warm memories of David, of making music, of long talks, of being encouraged by his intimacy with Jesus. We continue to pray for you in these days.
Beautiful service. One of my best friends is gone but he will never be forgotten.
I was so saddened to hear of David’s passing. I worked with David for 34 years. I was always impressed with his demeanor; his smile was always infectious. The livestream was beautiful, (under the circumstances). My prayers go out to you, the family at this dark time.

Gloria,
What a beautiful service of remembrance for David this morning. He will always be remembered by us for his dry sense of humour, his wonderful gift of music, and his deep love for the Lord Jesus. David made everyone he spoke to feel important – he listened and responded with meaning – we will miss him as a friend, a brother in Christ and a Board Member on our Ministry. We will also continue to pray for you and your family!
Love, Susan & Gordon
David and I remembered Uncle Dave today whilst watching his service. It was touching to see the photos of him, and hear all the stories. Thank you to all who helped to put it on and organise it. Uncle Dave was always so kind to me, and I have very special memories of him from growing up, working at Mac, and our wedding. I will miss him dearly.
Our hearts and love go out to Auntie Gloria, the rest of the family, and everyone else saddened by this sudden loss.
Gloria, we were thankful that we were able to join the service via live stream this morning. Our prayers were with you, Jessie, Tiffany, Matt and Jen as you celebrated David’s life.

David made me laugh.
He was also an endless resource of music knowledge and experience and he was one of the few human beings I know that could genuinely appreciate the joy of finding that LP or CD for which you’ve been hunting for years.
He was a good friend and in many ways he became the older brother that I never had.
To Gloria and the entire Kidney clan, I am so sorry for your immense loss.
I will miss David but I am also very grateful to have had him in my life.
Dear Gloria and family, the service for David was lovely . I am so sorry for your loss but can tell from the wonderful stories shared that you have many loving memories to help you at this difficult time.
So sad I wasn’t able to be there for Gloria and family.
Love you all!
I want to share some comments from some of my friends I received.
So saddened by the loss of Dave. I know how close the Kidney brothers were … (Jim Cran)
Always enjoyed Dave’s dry/sly sense of humour and his wide eclectic taste in music. Thanks to him I still listen to Hawaiian guitar music now and then.
(Bob Meiler)
It was a privilege to know Dave. If there ever was a good example to follow it was him.
(Karl Andrus)
To Gloria and family we continue to pray for the whole family for God’s presence to comfort and strengthen you. David was a man who loved people and had time for them. I will miss talking to him after service and mostly the way he sang The Old rugged Cross
The Filion family are deeply saddened by David’s passing. David was a close friend to Kirsten’s family and had officiated our wedding as well as the dedication ceremonies for all 3 of our children. He will be deeply missed. We too are thankful that we were able to watch the funeral service via livestream.
Beautiful tributes, Gloria, Jesse and Matt. Great love for a great man. Paul and I both watched, and my mom was able to listen along too through the phone. xo
God IS Love!
I had the privilege of meeting and working with David in 2008 at McMaster University, and then having the good fortune to work full-time with him as my manager in 2014. I’ll remember his understated humour, calm demeanor, and passion for the arts, but most of all, I’ll remember his kindness and empathy. Thank you to the family for sharing this beautiful service. May God comfort you all.
Gloria, Jesse & Tiffany, Matt and Jen and girls : It was good to be able to share in the service today. Many tears were shed. Truly you were blessed with a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Holding onto Hope with you and for you
Love from Alison, Dave & Micah Witt
Don & Pat Ruddle listened to the live stream today. Our heartfelt love and prayers will continue now and for years to come!
I watched this morning from the comfort of my favourite cozy chair on our front porch. Just as it was mentioned there would be a hole in us that we need to fill, the chickadees, who recently moved into the birdhouse Jason and Elizabeth built in our front tree, chirped happily and all flew out.
I’ll have to add a guitar to the birdhouse in Uncle David’s memory.
Thinking of you all- lots of love.
Listening to the service i remember him as the gentle one always listening. Sorry for your loss.
What a beautiful and honouring funeral service. I was touched by Jesse and Matt’s reflections. Thank you for sharing, I feel like now I know your Dad a bit better.
I will fondly remember Mr. Kidney, especially for his heartfelt contributions during our church gatherings and, like my Dad mentioned, for the brevity of his emails.
What a touching service this morning for David. We send deepest sympathy to you and
your family and pray for healing to you all as you grieve at this time.
Love Maureen & George
Gloria, Jesse, Matt and the entire Kidney family.
My condolences for your loss on the passing of David.
Thank you for the invitation to share with you this morning.
David and I were good friends and colleges for 37 years. We had been through many fun, interesting and and few tough times both at work and the closeness we shared about the stories and events of our families. David taught me and provided me with many opportunities which I will not forget.
The ride home at nights were to say the least always very interesting.
David, miss you my friend.
Gloria, Jesse & Matt
So very saddened to hear if Dave’s passing. He was one of the kindest, empathetic & sincerest people I have ever had as a boss.. I loved it when he & Rick would bring their guitars & play the old tunes from 60’s & 70’s during lunch…Heaven has another angel…
Dear Gloria,
I was able to participate in David’s memorial. What a beautiful tribute to him and who he was. I smiled at your wedding picture as I can still remember that day! May God grant you and your boys, daughters-in-law and beautiful granddaughters, strength in the days to come. David will always be with and part of you!
So thankful we got to remember David with you today. What a blessing he has been in our lives. We pray that the legacy he leaves behind will bear much fruit. Love to you all

What a wonderful service and tribute!
I have been thinking about all of you this week and send my deepest condolences.
Gloria and family, I was in utter shock when I heard about David. Although I didn’t know him very long I felt like we had been friends for years. He was a great boss and I couldn’t thank him enough for giving me the opportunity to work at Mac. As a fellow guitarist, we would spend many coffee breaks talking about guitars, music trivia and bands we had seen in the past.
He will be greatly missed. We are so sorry for your loss.
The service was beautiful. My condolences and prayers are with the family. Hearing his voice in the recordings of hymns was a great touch and will be a nice memory to take forward.
A beautiful service for a beautiful soul. We are blessed to have such wonderful neighbours and will miss his smile and laugh. Our hearts are with you Gloria and your family.
Gloria, we were very sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. Rejoicing that he is with the Lord but grieving for your loss. We have very fond memories of his time with us serving at boys camp. We will pray for you, and your children, for comfort.
So sorry we could not be at the service in person to hug you and support you, but what a blessing to be able to watch it live and feel as though we were there with you. So many wonderful memories of David. We listened and remembered with tear filled eyes. David held a very special place in my heart and I loved him dearly. As my praise team partner, he would always look over at me in the middle of a song and give me that smirk that was “oh so David” !! He had such a big heart and an amazing passion for God. Sending our hugs to Gloria and the family. -Sharon and Mark Maxted
Hi Gloria, Matt, Jessie, Tiffany and Jen
I sat by the canal today watching and listening to the celebration of David’s life! In my heart it was standing room only!!! Such a good guy …heaven is celebrating his life too! He lived for Jesus…Jay and I are blessed to have known him! You are each in our thoughts and prayers.
We are so very blessed to have met David. Hearing the service, it was evident that he was a Godly man who loved his family, church family, friends, and co-workers. It was so touching to hear how willing he was to extend encouraging words to people, whether he knew them or not. David’s love continues on through his family, for love is the greatest gift of all. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you during this very difficult time.
What a beautiful service it was today, one that honoured David for the man of God he was. Not many of us get to sing at our own funeral, but how great it was to hear hymns being sung by David one more time. Jesse and Matt, your tributes were heartfelt and beautiful, and I was glad I was at home where the tears could freely flow. It was good to hear 3 of his close friends recounting their memories, and speaking and singing words of comfort. We will all miss David so much.
Gloria, Jesse & Tiffany, Matt and Jen, I am so thankful I was able to join the service via live stream, thank you. My thoughts and prayers continue to be with you.
David, thank you for noticing.

Gloria, Jesse, Matt, my heartfelt sympathy to you and your families. I will so miss David in the neighbourhood. I remember the random chats in the driveway, the neighbourhood suppers, his waves from the car as you both went on assorted errands. Chats with David were guaranteed to include kind observations punctuated by his dry humour. What a guy! Sending hugs to all of you.
We are deeply saddened to hear of David’s passing. He was a significant member of our neighbourhood and was a valued and respected member of the McMaster Community. May your relatives, friends, neighbours and his work colleagues offer you and your family comfort at this time off loss. He will be missed.
