Hodgson, Trevor

Hodgson, Trevor – It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Trevor Hodgson, beloved husband, father and grandfather, on July 7th at the age of 91. As a husband he remained forever in love with our mother, Thelma, who passed away almost ten years ago. His devotion to Thelma was shown through his daily visits to be by her side throughout her long struggle with Alzheimer’s. As a father to Sarah and Paul, he was the beacon and adventurer who led us around the world on his many journeys. He inspired the love of art, music and the world in his two dear grandchildren, Caden and Molly. He will be sadly missed by daughter Sarah (Philip), son Paul (Shelagh), grandchildren Molly and Caden, Barrie, Alan, Gail, Craig and Claire in the UK, many former students here and abroad, and his friends and colleagues over the years in both the arts and music communities. Trevor was predeceased by his wife Thelma, sisters Norma and Iris and parents John and Eva.

Born in Bradford, England, Trevor taught at Blackpool College of Art in the UK, and Bellarmine College in Kentucky before making Canada his home in 1969. He then taught drawing and painting at Queen’s University in Kingston and eventually moved to Hamilton to become director of the Dundas Valley School of Art. His twenty-two year tenure there was characterized by the relaxed and highly creative environment he established which attracted prominent artists from across the country and encouraged the growing reputation of the school. Trevor was also a talented jazz musician playing both the saxophone and clarinet. He performed widely throughout Canada and the US and was even recognized as an Honorary Citizen of New Orleans. Trevor received numerous honours for his immense contribution to the local arts community over the years. Known primarily for his painting and printmaking, he was also an early practitioner in xerography and sound art. His distinctly modernist paintings reflected his interest in design, combining painterly techniques with abstract ideas. His work ranged from the whimsical to the philosophical, always presenting a thoughtful and personal reflection on the human condition. Trevor’s work is included in many public and private collections including York University, UK; Bellarmine College, JB Speed Art Museum and State of Kentucky Collection, US; as well as Queen’s University, the Province of Ontario Collection, and the National Gallery of Canada. A service to remember Trevor will be held on Thursday, July 14th at 1 o’clock and will take place at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, Ontario. Interment Grove Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the SPCA, in respect of Trevor’s love of his pets. Masks required. Kretz, Joan

November 27, 1949 – July 3, 2022

With deep sadness we announce the passing of Joan Kretz peacefully, surrounded by her loving family. Devoted wife/partner to Larry Kretz for 46 years. Beloved mother to Colin (Lisa), Brian (Melissa), and Emily (Chris). Proud and doting grandmother to Alice, Caroline, Hannah, Kodi, Austin, Derek, and Grace. Sister-in-law to Jan, Paul (Judy), and Catherine (Donn). Proud aunt to Vanessa, Ian, and Taylor (Chris). Joan was born in Hamilton to Albert and Barbara Rathbone (predeceased) and raised her family in Dundas, Ontario. Joan had a yen for adventure whether winter camping, wilderness canoe tripping, sailing Lake Ontario; cruising the Intercoastal Waterway, sailing the Bahamas, exploring Europe or enjoying the RV lifestyle. She loved being on the water and basking in the sun on the deck of the sailboat with a good book, a cold glass of wine or just sharing time with friends. Her favourite moments however, were cooking meals and preparing celebrations surrounded by her family. She loved listening to music and dancing in the kitchen. She appreciated the quiet moments in life, when the pace slowed down and conversation came easily. Joan had a gentle, easy-going nature that attracted a wide variety of friends who will miss her soft approach to life and her innate ability to connect with and care for people. Joan will be remembered for a kind and comforting heart that touched everyone who met her. She is still remembered fondly by many as “Momma Kretz”. The family is grateful to all her caregivers at the Juravinski Cancer Center especially Dr. Meyers and all the nurses in the Chemo Suite. We also want to thank the staff at the Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for a caring and graceful experience. Friends will be received by the family on Thursday, July 7, in the afternoon and evening from 2-4 and 6-8 at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Augustine’s Church, 58 Sydenham Street, Dundas on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Interment St. Augustine’s Cemetery. ROUNG, Joyce (nee Shaver)

With quiet grace, as she lived her 88 years of life, Joyce passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side. She is survived by Harry, her soulmate and husband of 68 years, their four children and their spouses Paul, Dave (Phyllis), Scott (Nicki) and Joanne (Pete Kehoe).     She adored ‘her darlings’ – grandchildren Graham, Fraser, Britney, Emma, Trish, Nicole, Colin, Ben, Olivia, and Kellen and eight great grandchildren. Joyce will be dearly missed by her sister Barb Dagg and was predeceased by her brothers Murray and Clinton Shaver. Special Auntie, second mom and cherished friend to so many including lifelong friendships with her ‘poker girls.’

Family was at the heart of everything Joyce did from impromptu ‘grandma days’ to her exceptional ability to set a few extra spots at the table, to life lessons such as treasuring the small moments and the undeniable fact that butter and salt makes everything better. Joyce didn’t just say she loved us, she showed us through countless selfless gestures.

We will honour Joyce’s wonderful life on Tuesday, June 28th from 2-4 and 6-8pm at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St, in Dundas. This will be an opportunity to come together to celebrate the extraordinary person that Joyce was and to share in the beautiful memories that we all have of such a gentle, caring, and thoughtful person.

Her family would like to thank those who have been such a source of strength and support to us. Your thoughts, love, visits, food and hugs have meant so much. A special thank you to Evelyn Woart, our angel caregiver who provided Joyce with such comfort over the past year.
