With heavy hearts, we share the passing of Donald “Don” George Dobbing, who left a week shy of his 95th birthday, surrounded by his closest friends and family. Don returns home to our Lord and reunites with his wife, Shirley Dobbing (nee Inman). We are deeply grateful to the team at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for their care and comfort during Don’s final days.
Raised on a working farm in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Don learned the value of hard work early, went on to a distinguished career as an engineer in the steel industry, and cared devotedly for his wife Shirley, especially during her final 15-years battling illness. Don’s favourite adventures included motorhome trips to Arizona, fishing trips to Barry’s Bay, and dinner date nights at the Erie Beach Hotel.
Don’s quick-wit, humour, and sharp-mind were with him until the very end. A lifelong lover of sport and the outdoors, he was an avid lacrosse player, boxer, golfer, and gardener. He also had a lifelong passion for cars and maintained his independence and love of driving until shortly before entering hospice.
Don is survived by his Sawyer and Pietrantonio family, who adopted him years ago and cared for him deeply. They carry forward his memory and life lessons. A private celebration of Don’s life will be held. IN lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks for donations to Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice.
I only met Don once in my life but that was more than enough for me to know that he was a wonderful human being. Rest in peace!
Oh what a great photo of Don & Shirley. My heart is going to hold on to his genuine and mischievous giggle. What a special guy to encounter.
I’ve known Don for many years. He enjoyed road trips with me and going out to Tim Hortons. I’ll miss his visits at my work and calling him throughout the day to see how he’s doing. I enjoyed visiting him at his home and bringing him dinners my husband and I cooked for him, he really seemed to enjoy that. We also had many good conversations about all the adventures he had with his wife. You’ll be missed by many Don. I’m happy you went peacefully, you’ll never be forgotten. 💐⚘️
The last time I saw uncle Donny, (my mother (Myrtle’s) brother) and aunt Shirley, I was 29, it was at my oldest daughter’s birthday party, she was 7 and is now turn 47 this year. He was always so funny and genuine! He was out of sight but always thought of fondly and offen. My Condolences to his son Donald and his family.
