Ronald Hugh Buttrum, in his 87th year, passed away suddenly on his family farm in rural Flamborough, on Thursday, October 5th, 2023, with his son by his side. Ron left us with his boots on the ground, doing what he loved best – farming until the very last moment of his life. He has gone to join his beloved wife of 44 years, Etelka (2008) and his daughter Kathy (2022) who was always his shining star. Ron leaves behind his loving son (and farming partner extraordinaire) Hugh Scott Buttrum (Roberta Benallick), his dear son-in-law Dale Young (Kathy Buttrum, predeceased), Roberta’s children Krista and Jacob (Noelle) and grandchildren Hazel and Hudson. The loss of Ron will be felt by many close friends; some of those friends were his lifelong buddies. His companionship will also be missed by his dear friend, Kay Aldgate. People who knew Ron knew him as a devoted family man, a hard-working farmer who raised cattle, hogs, and spinach, and was a respected cash cropper. For 65 years he was a Mason of the Dufferin Lodge No. 291. Ron will truly be missed by everyone. Visitors will be received on Thursday, October 12th from 3-8 pm at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas, ON, where the funeral service will also take place, on Friday October 13th at 11:30 am. Interment will follow immediately afterwards at the Mount Zion Cemetery, Flamborough, where Ron will be laid to rest. Expressions of sympathy and memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, or the ALS Society of Canada.
We will always cherish those beautiful memories of camping together-chasing that Orange and the fun we had. Through mud, rain, the heat!! In Georgetown! tornado warnings. We 6 had quite the laughs together. Love you and miss you. RIP Ron. Peter and Chris Worron.

Sending my deepest condolences to you Scott. You are all in my thoughts ❤️🙏
Always a warm smile, welcoming handshake and a quiet, friendly hello. And no matter how busy, Ron always had all the time in the world to stop for a moment to say Hello and to catch up … something he has passed along to Scott as well. I will miss those moments with Ron. But I am pleased to hear that Ron’s final moments were spent doing what he loved most with his son and lifetime farming partner. Scott and Roberta, we are all so sorry for your family’s loss in what has been a very difficult year. May your lifetime of cherished memories and the gathering of close family and friends bring some peace and comfort at this difficult time.

The quiet smile and shy demeanour and good looks , these were the things I first noticed about Ron. We met at the metro grocery store where I worked and we soon became fast friends. We chatted all the time and I grew to admire his loyalty to family ,friends and the land . When I was looking for cornstalks to decorate the store for the fall I asked Ron and he very generously donated some to us. His rhubarb patch is legendary and he graciously allowed my sister and I to pillage it often happily accepting baked goods in compensation. While I was saddened to hear of his passing I was at the same time happy to hear he died as he lived , boots on the ground ,in his home and with Scott by his side . My love and prayers to Scott,Roberta and family at this difficult time. He will be missed but your memories of happy times will comfort you and you need only to look out at your fields to feel his presence . Xo
Dear Scott, Roberta and Family,
I was very sorry to read about your dad’s passing. He was always so welcoming and willing to share his expertise. I will always remember how helpful your dad was when we bought our Gleaner combine. He sure knew his Allis equipment. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this sad time. Please accept my heartfelt condolences.
Sincerely, Marty
Fifty years ago I was working for Ron. While living in an apartment in his farmhouse I grew to know and respect Ron. I always felt that Ron was very fair with his workers and he never asked me to do anything he wouldn’t do himself. He instilled in me the value of hard work which greatly helped me when I moved on and started my own business. I have always appreciated the fact that Ron took a chance on me back then. Scott, the way you described Ron’s final day here, I can’t imagine a better way to go. RIP Ron, you’ve earned it!
What a fitting way to depart this earth. My condolences to Scott, Roberta and family.
At the lowest point in my life, Ron said to me “I’ve thought about you for a long time”. I had not seen nor spoken with him for 61 years. We began our friendship in March of 2021 and had 2-1/2 years together. Those were truly my Halcyon days. Thank you Ron.
