Donovan, Betty

Mary Elizabeth Traver was born in Jerseyville on March 25th, 1925 – almost 100 years ago. Although we are sad to lose her, we are relieved that our gracious mother is finally at peace.

Betty moved to Dundas as a teenager. In 1943, she married Bob Donovan, who passed away in 2007. Together they raised their family at 11 York Street in Dundas: Donna Jean Wignall (John 2016), John Michael (2008), Ronald Patrick (Patricia 2024), and Roberta MaryEllen Ziegler (Dennis).

The family grew with the addition of 12 cherished grandchildren: John Wignall, Greg Wignall, Chris Wignall, Jane Dosman, Lauri Donovan, Carri Harrison, Joel Ward, Alethea Donovan, Nathan Donovan, Joelle Ross, Cindy Maracle, and Angela Kerr. Now, there are a “great” number of great grandchildren and, even, great great grandchildren.

Betty was an active member of St. Paul’s United Church for many years. She was a loyal friend to so many people. After about 60 years on York Street, Mom moved to Bertram Place and, eventually, to Wentworth Lodge. We are grateful to her many caregivers who assisted in her senior years.

Betty’s life will be remembered and honored at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas ON with a visitation on Sunday, September 22nd, 2024 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A memorial service will be held at the funeral home on Monday, September 23rd, 2024 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alzheimer’s Canada or The SPCA.

Alkerton, Michael “Mike”

It is with great sadness that we share the loss of our dad, Mike Alkerton, in his 81st year. He peacefully left this world Monday, September 16 in the wonderful care of Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas after a long battle with COPD. Mike lived and died by his own terms, and he loved unconditionally.

Mike was true to his hometown Dundas where everyone knew him. Hockey was a big part of his life, he played with the Dundas Merchants and coached Dundas minor hockey and then played old timer hockey for many years. He loved playing golf with his buddies and they started the season every Good Friday, even in the snow!

Mike put his heart and soul into his club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 Dundas, where he was a Life Member and on the Executive where he served 2 Presidential terms, and was Membership & Bursary Chairman for many years. Mike held a membership as Sergeant in the 11th field with the Hamilton Artillery Association.

Mike was a proud 50 year career member of the IBEW Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.

He is survived by his loving wife Joan, his daughters Barb (Martin) & Lisa (Terry), granddaughter Becca (Richard), grandson Chris (Matt), brother Art (Jack), sister Brenda (Barry), and many extended family members and friends. Mike is predeceased by his brother Ken and sister Christine. We would like to thank so many people that supported Mike throughout the past 2 years with their kindness and compassion, and also his health care providers at St. Joseph’s Hospital Respirology team, Dr. Chan, his nurse Carly, the PSW’s, and the caring team at Margaret’s Place.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Margaret’s Place Hospice through St. Joseph’s Foundation or The Alzheimer Society of Canada

There will be a Celebration of Life held in honour of our dad at the Dundas Legion Branch 36 on Saturday, October 26, 1:00-5:00 p.m., beginning with a Legion Service at 1:00 p.m..

Private family interment

Flosman, George

1937-2024

Born on April 13th, 1937 in a small village in Bohemia, George (Jiri) Flosman was one year old when the Nazi’s invaded Czechoslovakia.  His father was a Miller, and his mother came from a politically connected family. George was the youngest of three boys and he lived in the family Mill. His parents shielded him from the worst of the Nazi occupation, and he fondly remembered his days, living and working on the farm and at the Mill. At the end of the war, freedom again reigned but only briefly and when the iron curtain descended across Eastern Europe, his family became the target of the STB, the Communist secret police, and they were forced to flee.  After a time in a refugee camp in Germany, George and family emigrated to Canada. They worked on a farm until they could afford to buy their own.

No one could ever accuse George Flosman of letting the grass grow under his feet. When he was young, he became enamored of flying so after working all day on the farm, he took on extra jobs to pay for flying lessons.  He wanted to build and design things, so he became an engineer.  He chafed at working for others and so quit his job and started a welding/fabricating business in the early 1970s and grew it into a going concern, retiring at the tender age of 81.  When Czechoslovakia finally threw off the yoke of communism, he travelled back to the land of his birth to fix up the old family Mill.   Never one to be idle, George spent his spare time working to improve his community, both personally and as a member of the Optimist Club.

One of the most significant events in his life occurred while he was studying engineering at the University of North Carolina, for it was there that he met Sandra Clark.  They would be married and share nearly 60 years together before her passing in 2022.

George is survived by two sons and their wives, Mike (Heather) and Rob (Meredith) and six grandchildren, Isaac, Sadie, Will, Jane, Ben and Alec.  He was the very epitome of the eternal optimist.  To him, there was no adversity; only challenges that could always be overcome by a little hard work, perseverance, and common sense.

George Flosman left this world on September 11th, 2024 having lived a consequential life.  We are saddened by his passing and the world will be a less interesting place without him, but we must remain positive.  George would insist upon it.  Cause to do so can be found in the fact that we had the privilege of his company for 87 years.

A Funeral Service will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024 at 10a.m. Burial to follow at Grove Cemetery.
