November 17, 1926 – March 13, 2015

Holmes, Owen Foster “Roy” – at his home on Friday, March 13, 2015, in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Shirley and loving father to Gayle, and Paul (Janice). Grandfather to Ryan, Wes and Hilary, and sadly missed by his sister Margurite Lewis. Also missed by his sisters-in-law; Claire McCullough and Beverley Holmes. Predeceased by his brother Rev. Gerald P. Holmes and his twin brother Ross. Roy was a long time employee of Bertram’s in Dundas and Wean United in Cambridge, was a former member of the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club, and a member of the RCL Br#36, Dundas. Roy was an active reservist until his retirement, serving as Major with the 8th Field Regiment, Ex- C.O. of the Signals and was with the Medical Corps. Friends will be received by the family on Wednesday afternoon from 12 until the Service for Roy at 1 o’clock at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy to the Juravinski Cancer Centre would be appreciated by the family.

Passow, Emily Louise (nee Banks)

December 30, 1939 – March 12, 2015

Passow, Emily Louise (nee Banks) – December 30, 1939, Annandale, PEI – March 12, 2015, Hamilton, ON. Emily passed peacefully away after a brief illness at the Hamilton General Hospital with family by her side. Dearly loved wife of Brian for 46 years. Devoted and loving mother to Kathleen Passow and Heather Neiser (Andrew) and grandchildren Rachel and Justin Neiser. Emily lovingly devoted her time taking care of her daughter Kathleen. In keeping with Emily’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held at a later date. If you so wish, donations to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA would be appreciated by the family.

Hannigan (Gravelin), Margaret (nee Skalazoob) – Peacefully in her sleep at St. Joseph’s Villa on Sunday, March 8, 2015 in her 91st year. Wife of the late Merle Hannigan and Roland Gravelin. Loving mother of Cheryl Gravelin McQueen (Nairn). Loving grandmother of Mark (Jodi) and their daughters Evan and Blake and David (Andrea) and their sons Matthew and Ethan. Special aunt to Gailynn Smith (Don), Sandra Staniland (Doug, deceased), Terry Anderson, Heather Pawlinsky, Hettie Pawlinsky, Maxine Zamzow (Gordon), Twylla (Andy) McKendry, Pam, Jim (Eileen) and Bob (Judy) Waechter. Predeceased by her sisters Neva, Christine, Mary, Sadie and Elsie and her brothers Alexander and John. Margaret was a devoted employee of Sears Canada for over 30 years and a member of the Veterans Service League. She was also a very devoted fan of the Toronto Blue Jays. To celebrate Margaret’s life, we invite family and friends to share memories of her at a gathering at the Cattel Centre, 45 Main Street, Dundas (next door to the funeral home) on Wednesday, March 11 from 10:00 a.m until 12:00 p.m. Those who would like to join us, a eulogy commemorating Margaret’s life will begin at 11:00 a.m. In keeping with Margaret’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private interment will be held by family. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Veterans Service League, 1473 Main Street East, Hamilton, would be appreciated by the family.

Thompson, James Ian Alexander

Thompson, James Ian Alexander – Peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, March 7th, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in his 89th year. Beloved husband of Averil, dear father of sons David of Stratford and Simon of Toronto, cherished father-in-law of David’s wife Kim, dearly loved Grandpa of Megan and Gillian and brother of Isobel (deceased). Ian was born in Northern Ireland and graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast. He married Averil Morrison in 1956. In 1968 he and his wife, with their two young sons, emigrated to Canada, where both Ian and Averil worked at McMaster University for approximately 23 years. He will be sorely missed by family and friends, especially those connected with St. Mark’s United Church (where he was a member of the Senior and the Bell Choir), Symphony on the Bay (where he played his violin) and the Probus Club of Dundas. Former member of the John Laing Singers. Cremation has taken place. Visitation at Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, on Friday, March 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Family and friends are invited to a celebration of Ian’s life to be held at ST. MARK’S UNITED CHURCH, 1 Lynndale Drive, Dundas on Saturday, March 14th, 2015 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers and as an expression of sympathy, the family would appreciate donations to St. Mark’s United Church or the Canadian Cancer Society.

Mitchell, Kenneth Clare – Passed away peacefully at the Hamilton General Hospital on Wednesday, March 4, 2015. Predeceased by his wife Mary-Ann. Will be loved always by his son Andrew (Allison), daughter Sarah; brother Keith (Betty) and by his grandchildren Stephen, Ryan, Alex, Lucas and Ryley and special family friend Mark Pillini who drove dad around. Ken was a very social person. He frequented Tim Horton’s to talk to people and basically struck up a conversation with anyone who was passing by. A special thank you to St. Joseph’s Villa Day Program, Ken enjoyed the social interaction there. In keeping with Ken’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held. If you so wish, donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada would be appreciated by the family.

Brooks, Russell “LaVerne” – After a life well lived, Russell LaVerne Brooks passed away from a short bout of cancer at McNally Hospice. Predeceased by his wife, Elma Ruth (Woodley) 2005; daughter Susan Marie Brooks (2011); Sister Madeline (2014) and brother-in-law Edward James; Brother-in-law Jim Woodley; Brother-in-law Arthur Edworthy and Sister-in-law Mary Edworthy (Woodley); Sister-in-law Adelle Woodley (Stubbs) and Brother-in-law, Bill Woodley. Survived by daughter Diane Ruth Brooks Langs and husband Edwin Langs; Lady-friend Edna Kennedy; Sister Donna and husband Bob Cameron; “Best buddy Bruce” and Jackie Hilton. He wanted to remember Rhoda…what a dear friend. LaVerne was a long time employee of Otis Elevator retiring in 1992. Belonged to Burford IOOF Lodge, Alberton Presbyterian Church, and Life Member of Ancaster Agricultural Society. LaVerne enjoyed country living and loved being at the cottage with family and friends; loved hunting and fishing with his friends and his black lab, Toby; and best of all showing Belgian horses at the local fairs with friends Norma and (Earl) Baker, Cecil and Martha Wells, Wayne and Donna Gurney, Helen Thomson, Ed and Glenda Dickson. Special thanks to the West Niagara Palliative Care Team and the McNally Hospice…both were caring and compassionate to Dad and family. Friends will be received by the family on Sunday afternoon from 1 until 5 at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, where the Service for LaVerne will be held Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock. Interment Zion Hill Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy to McNally House Hospice, Grimsby would be appreciated by the family.
