Chant, Ross Douglas – Passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Healthcare on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 after a long battle with heart disease. Dearly loved and missed by his wife Peggy of 17 years. Predeceased by his first wife Isobel and his 8 siblings. Loved always by sons Rick (Kathryn) and Mark (Debbie), daughters Barb Chant, Cheryl (Jeffrey Martindale) and Laurie Oare, 13 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Remembered fondly by brother-in-law Hubert Marshall and many nieces and nephews and his special friend, “his dog Angel”. Ross enjoyed his camping days and was a member of the Canadian Family Camping Federation and enjoyed many years of square dancing. Special thanks to the staff/physicians at the Hamilton General Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, Heart Function Clinic, Thrombosis Clinic, The LHIN (CCAC) and all the nurses at Bayshore for their care. Friends will be received by the family on Saturday, July 21st from 12:00 p.m. until the time of Ross’ Service at 1:00 p.m. at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Interment White Chapel Memorial Gardens. If you so wish, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation, would be appreciated by the family in lieu of flowers.

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Thelma Olga de Souza (nee Davies) in her 98th year. Thelma was predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Leo de Souza, her sister Anne, and brothers Sonny, Douglas and Stephen. She is survived by siblings Dianne, Joy and Robert Davies and Giselle Little. Thelma was a devoted mother of 6 children: Theresa, Tazik (Renate), Mary Di Pietro (Albert), Fran Hutton (Joseph), Phillip (Sandra), Margaret Griffin (Eric) and mother-in-law to Kay Canham (John Hostein). Thelma was predeceased by her children Mary (1991) and Phillip (2009) and carried her grief with her each day until her own death. We are comforted by the certainty that she is reunited with them now. She was the beloved grandmother of Michele nee de Souza (Jason Rees), Adrienne de Souza (Ronald Morriss), Meghan de Souza (Paul Goertz), Christi Di Pietro, Lisa Di Pietro (Paul Turpin), Elizabeth Di Pietro (James Flanagan), Shane Hutton (Denice), Laura nee Hutton (Nelson Pinto), Monica nee Griffin (Mathew Fisher) and Richard Griffin. She was the loving great-grandmother of Mary-Ashley Di Pietro (Shane Grant), Jack and Maddi Westbrook, Mackenzie and Campbell Turpin, the twins Jake and Angus, and Lenny Flanagan, Olivia and Darcy Morriss, and Catherine Fisher. The grief we feel is lessened by our knowledge of Thelma’s unwavering faith, and we are reassured that we will once again be reunited with her. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Turner Family Funeral Home in Dundas, ON. Visitation is Tuesday, July 17, 1-3 pm at St James Anglican Church, 137 Melville St., Dundas, ON. Funeral service at 3:30 p.m. A reception celebrating Thelma’s life will follow in the church hall. We wish to extend special thanks to St. Elizabeth’s home care service and Thelma’s special caregivers: Marie, Bibi, Sabina, Laura, and Stacey. In lieu of flowers a donation made to Heart and Stroke Foundation, Epilepsy York, or Sick Kids’ Hospital would be greatly appreciated.

Rutherford, Alan and Carla (nee Holmes) – Alan and Carla Rutherford passed tragically on Monday, July 9, 2018. The happy couple just celebrated their 11 year wedding anniversary this Spring. Both were highly involved members of the community including several Quilters Guilds, The Royal Hamilton Yacht Club and The Halton Outdoor Club. Carla, loving mother to Richard (Evangelia) Taylor and Christopher (Talia) Taylor, and proud grandmother to Olivia, Matthew, Violet and Chelsey. Remembered by her father Victor Holmes and his wife the late Annie Jean Holmes, her sister Vicky (Mike) Pickup, and many nieces and nephews. Alan, loving father to Alison Plato and Amelia (Cory) Ryan. Brother to Paul (Glenn) Rutherford, Carol Fearman and Brenda (Wayne) Moerschfelder. Papa Al will also be remembered by his four grandchildren. They shared a mutual love of labradors and lab coats. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides and the Hamilton Health Sciences Foundation. Friends and family are invited to Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, on Saturday, July 14th from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A Funeral Service will take place on Sunday, July 15th at St. Paul’s United Church at 2:00 p.m. with a Celebration of Life to follow at the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club, 555 Bay Street North, Hamilton.

Passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, July 8, 2018 at the Dr. Bob. Kemp Hospice. John is survived by his loving wife and best friend Sheila. Cherished and much loved father of Lee and his wife Lindsay and daughter Amy. Proud Papa of Aurora and Athena. Predeceased by his parents John and Mary Robertshaw. Dear brother-in-law to Vaughn and Marilyn Gunby, John and Sharon Newlands, Bernard and Roberta Elphee and caring uncle to several nieces and nephews. John was a long-time employee of Procter and Gamble. He was also a fixture at the Dundas Arena and baseball diamonds for many years, first as a player, then coach, supportive parent and fan. Schimmel, Sophia Marion (née McMillan) – We announce with sadness that Sophia Schimmel of Dundas passed away in peace at Emmanuel House hospice in Hamilton on July 1, 2018. Sophie was predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph Schimmel (2013). She is dearly missed by her children Terence (Marlou), John (Lisa), Kevin (Rebecca), Marion, and Fiona (Paul) Kinsella. Her grandchildren Annabella, Ciara, Camille, Declan, Ryan, Lucy, Caitlin, Chloe, and late Kyle, will greatly miss their wonderful Nan. Deeply missed by sister Emma Mathieson in Scotland, and nieces and nephews in the UK. Born in 1935, Sophie grew up in Ayrshire, Scotland, with sisters Betty Barber, Isobel Hawksley, Jessie Taylor, and Emma Mathieson, and brother Jim McMillan. Sophie immigrated to Canada in 1956 at age 21 and settled in Hamilton to raise a family with her first husband John Kinsella. In 1984 she married Joseph Schimmel and they spent 30 devoted years together. Caring, generous, and funny, Sophia put a smile on all the faces she encountered. She complimented the good in others. She loved writing wee letters and poems with delightful drawings, telling stories and making jokes and, above all, spending time with family or catching up on their news. She passed on her artistic talent to family, and was always there to support. Sophia and Joseph were inseparable and enjoyed spending winters in Florida. Brave and loved to the end, Mum, “Wee Sopha”, Nan, Nanny, we deeply miss you. XXOO. Donations to Juvenile Diabetes (JDRF), Renascent Foundation, or Emmanuel House would be appreciated.
