June 10, 1935 – July 1, 2018
Schimmel, Sophia Marion (née McMillan) – We announce with sadness that Sophia Schimmel of Dundas passed away in peace at Emmanuel House hospice in Hamilton on July 1, 2018. Sophie was predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph Schimmel (2013). She is dearly missed by her children Terence (Marlou), John (Lisa), Kevin (Rebecca), Marion, and Fiona (Paul) Kinsella. Her grandchildren Annabella, Ciara, Camille, Declan, Ryan, Lucy, Caitlin, Chloe, and late Kyle, will greatly miss their wonderful Nan. Deeply missed by sister Emma Mathieson in Scotland, and nieces and nephews in the UK. Born in 1935, Sophie grew up in Ayrshire, Scotland, with sisters Betty Barber, Isobel Hawksley, Jessie Taylor, and Emma Mathieson, and brother Jim McMillan. Sophie immigrated to Canada in 1956 at age 21 and settled in Hamilton to raise a family with her first husband John Kinsella. In 1984 she married Joseph Schimmel and they spent 30 devoted years together. Caring, generous, and funny, Sophia put a smile on all the faces she encountered. She complimented the good in others. She loved writing wee letters and poems with delightful drawings, telling stories and making jokes and, above all, spending time with family or catching up on their news. She passed on her artistic talent to family, and was always there to support. Sophia and Joseph were inseparable and enjoyed spending winters in Florida. Brave and loved to the end, Mum, “Wee Sopha”, Nan, Nanny, we deeply miss you. XXOO. Donations to Juvenile Diabetes (JDRF), Renascent Foundation, or Emmanuel House would be appreciated. Visitation on Saturday, July 7, from 12 p.m. until Sophie’s Service at 1 p.m. at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas, ON.

Likewise, I only met Sophie briefly, but she sure must have had talent to create such a fine group of outgoing and artistic children. Im sure she will be greatly missed….
I have many fond memories of Sophia’s playfulness and creativity: traits that she passed on to her children, and are evident in her grandchildren as well. My thoughts are with the Kinsella family today, as they celebrate her life.
To my family, I am so sorry I could not be there with you today to celebrate Nan’s life. Know that you are all in my thoughts and that although there is distance between us, my love for you all keeps us close in my heart.
