Durksen, Daniel Bruce

June 3, 1954 – February 7, 2018

Durksen, Daniel Bruce, died Feb. 7, 2018 in his 64th year, dearly loved husband of Rick Spies, stepfather of Jeremy (Rita) Spies, Nell Spies (Anthony Morden), Miriam Spies, brother of Bill (Gita) Durksen, David (June) Durksen (St. Catharines) and Joan (Dan) Nicolle (Fort Langley, BC), nephew to many aunts and uncles, uncle to many nieces and nephews, dear friend of Diane Blanchard.   A resident of Dundas for the past 10 years he was born and raised in St. Catharines, son of Agatha and Alfred Durksen.  Educated at Brock and Western Universities, Mennonite Brethren Bible College (Winnipeg) he was a wonderfully talented and sensitive collaborative musician working in the areas of church music (First Baptist Church, Ingersoll, and Grace Anglican Church, Brantford both for many years), dance (accompanist for Oxford School of Dance, Ingersoll), choral music (Grand Philharmonic Choir in Kitchener-Waterloo, Ingersoll Choral Society and others), teaching (piano, organ, vocal) and examining (Canada Conservatory).  He was a superlative accompanist for both instruments and voice.   A gentle soul, a caring spirit, a loving heart endeared him to all.  His love for God made known in Christ shaped his every day.  Visitation at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas on Saturday, Feb. 10 from 1 to 5 pm.  Funeral service at GRACE ANGLICAN CHURCH, 4 Pearl St., Brantford on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 2 pm followed by reception and Freiwilliges (come with a story or a song, a poem or a praise word).  Burial Monday, Feb. 12 at 11 am in Grove Cemetery, Dundas.  Donations may be made to the MCC (Mennonite Central Committee), Grace Anglican Church (Brantford) or Grand Philharmonic Choir (Kitchener).

Portsmith, George Bernard “Barney”

Veteran WWII – Suddenly at home February 5th, 2018 in his 97th year, active and enjoying life to the end. Beloved husband of the late Margaret Kemp and the late Kathryn Alton Strauch. Survived by his sister Betty Lysons of Alberta and her children Wayne, Elaine and Betty Anne. He will be dearly missed by his step children Dave & Marnie Strauch and Marolyn Cook and their families. Visitation to be held Thursday, February 8th at 10a.m. with a Service to follow at 11a.m. at Copetown United Church, 2218 Governors Rd, Copetown, On . Cremation has taken place. Private Family Internment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Copetown United Church or a charity of your choice.

Lamey, Annie (Ann) Marie (nee Woolley)

Born:  November 25, 1922 – Hamilton, Ontario

Died:  February 3, 2018 – Bridgewater, Nova Scotia

 

Together at last.  After a separation of nearly seventeen years, Ann Marie Lamey, aged 95, left peacefully to join her husband, John Henry Lamey.  Ann leaves behind and will be sadly missed by daughter Deborah Sweet (David) of Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, granddaughters Lauren Sweet-Lawrence (Jeremy) of Morinville, Alberta, Robyn Sweet of Mahone Bay, and great-grandchildren Hannah, Sara and Joshua.  She is also survived by sisters-in-law Shirley Woolley of London, Ontario, Winnifred Tate of Waterdown, Ontario, brother-in-law Bernard Teague of Milton, Ontario and many nieces and nephews.  Ann was predeceased by her husband John (Jack), parents John and Elsie Woolley, brother Ernest Woolley, and sister Eileen Teague.  Born in Hamilton, Ontario and raised in nearby Dundas, Ann took a keen interest in sports, particularly basketball, and loved dancing.  Trained as a stenographer, she worked for John Bertram & Sons Co., then with her brother Ernie for the Royal Bank in Dundas.  Her marriage to Jack in 1948 took her to Beamsville, Ontario, where they made many lifelong friends.  Jack worked for Ontario Hydro, and in later years Ann worked as a bookkeeper for Albright Manor and Dandies Department Store until Jack’s retirement.  They enjoyed trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida before starting a new chapter in Peterborough, Ontario, boating and fishing to their hearts’ content.  A decision to return to Dundas brought them full circle.  They became active members of the Dundas Seniors’ Centre and enjoyed many bus and train trips with the group, crisscrossing Canada, the United States and Mexico in their travels.  A highlight was their personal trip to England and Scotland, visiting distant family.  Five years after Jack’s passing, Ann’s last move brought her to Nova Scotia to be closer to her daughter and family.  Many thanks to the kind and caring staff of Bridgewater’s Ryan Hall nursing home who made her final days so calm and comfortable.  Initial arrangements have been carried out by Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. A Visitation will take place at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, Ontario, on Sunday, February 11th  from 2:00-4:00 p.m.  The service will take place on Monday, February 12th at 1:00p.m. in the chapel with interment at Grove Cemetery in Dundas.  A reception will follow in the Cattel Centre next to Turner Family Funeral Home.  Expressions of sympathy in Ann’s name to a charitable organization of your choice would be appreciated by her family.

Heyerichs, Hannelise Hubertine “Hanne” (nee Krussmann)

April 22, 1928 – February 1, 2018

Heyerichs, Hannelise – in Dundas on February 1, 2018 in her 90th year.  Hanne Heyerichs was a resident of Grand Vista Gardens for over six decades and long-time owner of Elderslie Apiaries, Paisley.  Beloved wife of the late William Heyerichs, whom she met in Kindergarten. Hanne loved spending time in her colourful garden, and always enjoyed the company of her family, many friends and visitors.  Dearly missed by her children Ann (Damien), Joan (Mark) and Karl (Wanda).  Loving grandmother of Jamie, Mike and Nick Rose and William Heyerichs. Sincere thanks to all those who went above and beyond to ensure that our mother was comfortable and had everything she needed:  the caring staff at Amica, especially Sharon and Marlise, the staff of St. Elizabeth’s, especially Wendy, Kelly and Tracey, and the nurses from Bayshore.  Cremation has taken place.  Interment at Mt. Zion Cemetery, Flamborough, with immediate family only.  For those who wish, in lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

Hicks, Lloyd Bruce

Hicks, Lloyd Bruce – On Monday, January 29th, 2018, in his 88th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Mary “Geneva” (1991) and brother Orville (2009). Sadly missed by his son Gregory Bruce Hicks and wife Lynne, brother Harvey and wife Ann. Lloyd was the last Studebaker Twin and a 50 year member of the I.B.E.W Local 105 Hamilton. Thanks to the 2nd Floor staff at Grace Villa. Friends will be received by the family on Friday afternoon from 3 -7 at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. Cremation to follow. Inglis, Grace Bernice (nee Jackman)

May 29, 1917 – January 26, 2018

Inglis, Grace (nee Jackman) – Passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on January 26th, 2018 at the age of 100. Thanks to St. Joseph’s Villa for the excellent care these past 4 years. Beloved wife of the late Earl. Loving mother of Dorothea McLean, Earl, and Katie Fanning (John). Predeceased by daughter Suzanne Catt (Harold) and son Douglas. Dear sister of Robert (Linda).  Predeceased by sisters Mary, Doris Alcock, Treasure Gibb and brothers Douglas, Donald and William. Lovingly remembered by 12 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and friends.  She was an active member of Dundas Baptist Church for over 50 years where she served as deacon and enjoyed many years assisting with Helping Hands. She had an eclectic work history which included owning and operating the Clothes Closet consignment shop in Dundas, during the 80’s, also she was with the Guelph Mercury Newspaper and coordinated demonstrators for Mattel toys.  A celebration of a life well lived will take place at DUNDAS BAPTIST CHURCH, 201 Governors Road, Dundas on Saturday, February 3rd at 2:00 p.m., with visitation at the church at 1:00. DesRoches, William Edmond “Billy”

January 24, 1962 – January 20, 2018

DesRoches, William Edmond “Billy” – Suddenly at his home on Saturday, January 20, 2018, in his 56th year. Beloved son of the late Omer and Marie DesRoches, and brother to Ed (Deb). Billy will be sadly missed by his uncle Ted and aunt Donna Zess and his cousin Kim Idoine (Simon) and their boys Lucas and Josh. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Billy’s Life will be held at a later date.

Bedard, Lois (nee Gerrard)

Passed away January 20, 2019. She will be sadly missed by her son Daren. Her life was always sports oriented. She received her swimming medal at age 10. Played all high school sports, earning her letters at age 16. She joined the Ladies City Baseball League and won Rookie of the Year in 1947. She alley bowled in Hamilton as well as Montreal and lawn bowled (past president) at the Dundas Lawn Bowling Club. She enjoyed darts and shuffleboard at the H.A.F.A in Dundas and enjoyed many games of cards. There will be a double graveside ceremony for Bob and Lois at Greenwood Cemetery in Burlington, “Gerrard” plot.

Shupe, The Reverend Jean Elizabeth (Betty)

January 9, 1931 – January 18, 2018

SHUPE, The Reverend Jean Elizabeth (Betty) B.A., B.S.W., M.R.E. – Peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018 in her 88th year at St. Joseph’s Villa, Dundas, Ontario. Loving wife of 65 years and best friend of Albert Shupe, cherished and devoted mother of David (Sheila), Greg (Jill), Tom (Andrea), Mary (Rick) and Nancy (Calvin).  Beloved grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren;  predeceased by her mother and father, Ruth and Austin Major and brother Don.  Betty led a life of service to others, beginning with three years as an elementary school teacher before leaving the profession to raise her family of five children. In addition, Betty was active with the Big Sisters Association and foster parent to three boys for several years. When her children were all in school, Betty returned to university to earn a combined Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Social Work.  This led to a second career, initially as the first certified social worker at St. Joseph’s Villa and later as their Coordinator of Resident Services for a total of eight years. Betty then returned once again to school at Emmanuel College, where she was ordained in 1987 as a United Church minister. She served as minister at Glen Morris United Church for three years, and then qualified as an Intentional Interim Minister and served at eight different churches throughout Ontario.  Over the years, Betty and Al travelled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to the caring and compassionate team at St. Joseph’s Villa, Birch Trail Unit, where she spent the last year of her life.  Friends will be received at Turner Family Funeral Home (formerly Cattel, Eaton and Chambers) 53 Main Street, Dundas, Ontario, on Monday, January 22 from 6:00-9:00p.m.  Funeral service will be held at St. Mark’s United Church, 1 Lynndale Dr., Dundas at 11:00a.m. Tuesday, January 23. Laing, L. Pearl (nee Sanderson)

March 2, 1920 – January 11, 2018

Laing, L. Pearl – Passed away peacefully at Blackadar Continuing Care in Dundas on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in her 98th year.  Predeceased by her husband Jim (1988).  She will be loved and missed by her son Ian (Donna) and daughter Carol (late Bill Mercanti), grandchildren Lisa (Chris Bonney), Jeffrey (Kristi) and Leanne (James Halford), great-grandchildren Spencer, Cameron, Katelyn, Travis, Nathan, Brier, Daphne and Gordon and by her sister Rosie. Predeceased by her brother Harry and his wife Lois and brother-in-law Lloyd Wicks.  Pearl was passionate about volunteering and did so at Blackadar’s Nursing Home, Wentworth Lodge and St. Joseph’s Villa.  She was nominated for The 1992 Dundas “Citizen of the Year”, received a Certificate of Nomination for the International Year of Older Persons 1999 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for celebrating the significant accomplishments of extraordinary people from the OLTCA.  Special thank you to the Blackadar Nursing Home nurses and PSW’s for the compassionate care they gave especially during Pearl’s final days, it was exceptional and thank you to Chaplain Adam Walker.  In keeping with Pearl’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her family will celebrate her life at a later date.
