DesRoches, William Edmond “Billy” – Suddenly at his home on Saturday, January 20, 2018, in his 56th year. Beloved son of the late Omer and Marie DesRoches, and brother to Ed (Deb). Billy will be sadly missed by his uncle Ted and aunt Donna Zess and his cousin Kim Idoine (Simon) and their boys Lucas and Josh. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Billy’s Life will be held at a later date.
Passed away January 20, 2019. She will be sadly missed by her son Daren. Her life was always sports oriented. She received her swimming medal at age 10. Played all high school sports, earning her letters at age 16. She joined the Ladies City Baseball League and won Rookie of the Year in 1947. She alley bowled in Hamilton as well as Montreal and lawn bowled (past president) at the Dundas Lawn Bowling Club. She enjoyed darts and shuffleboard at the H.A.F.A in Dundas and enjoyed many games of cards. There will be a double graveside ceremony for Bob and Lois at Greenwood Cemetery in Burlington, “Gerrard” plot.

SHUPE, The Reverend Jean Elizabeth (Betty) B.A., B.S.W., M.R.E. – Peacefully on Thursday, January 18, 2018 in her 88th year at St. Joseph’s Villa, Dundas, Ontario. Loving wife of 65 years and best friend of Albert Shupe, cherished and devoted mother of David (Sheila), Greg (Jill), Tom (Andrea), Mary (Rick) and Nancy (Calvin). Beloved grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; predeceased by her mother and father, Ruth and Austin Major and brother Don. Betty led a life of service to others, beginning with three years as an elementary school teacher before leaving the profession to raise her family of five children. In addition, Betty was active with the Big Sisters Association and foster parent to three boys for several years. When her children were all in school, Betty returned to university to earn a combined Bachelor’s degree in Arts and Social Work. This led to a second career, initially as the first certified social worker at St. Joseph’s Villa and later as their Coordinator of Resident Services for a total of eight years. Betty then returned once again to school at Emmanuel College, where she was ordained in 1987 as a United Church minister. She served as minister at Glen Morris United Church for three years, and then qualified as an Intentional Interim Minister and served at eight different churches throughout Ontario. Over the years, Betty and Al travelled extensively throughout the world and enjoyed cooking and entertaining family and friends. The family would like to express their gratitude to the caring and compassionate team at St. Joseph’s Villa, Birch Trail Unit, where she spent the last year of her life. Friends will be received at Turner Family Funeral Home (formerly Cattel, Eaton and Chambers) 53 Main Street, Dundas, Ontario, on Monday, January 22 from 6:00-9:00p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Mark’s United Church, 1 Lynndale Dr., Dundas at 11:00a.m. Tuesday, January 23. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, donations to the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.

Laing, L. Pearl – Passed away peacefully at Blackadar Continuing Care in Dundas on Thursday, January 11, 2018 in her 98th year. Predeceased by her husband Jim (1988). She will be loved and missed by her son Ian (Donna) and daughter Carol (late Bill Mercanti), grandchildren Lisa (Chris Bonney), Jeffrey (Kristi) and Leanne (James Halford), great-grandchildren Spencer, Cameron, Katelyn, Travis, Nathan, Brier, Daphne and Gordon and by her sister Rosie. Predeceased by her brother Harry and his wife Lois and brother-in-law Lloyd Wicks. Pearl was passionate about volunteering and did so at Blackadar’s Nursing Home, Wentworth Lodge and St. Joseph’s Villa. She was nominated for The 1992 Dundas “Citizen of the Year”, received a Certificate of Nomination for the International Year of Older Persons 1999 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award for celebrating the significant accomplishments of extraordinary people from the OLTCA. Special thank you to the Blackadar Nursing Home nurses and PSW’s for the compassionate care they gave especially during Pearl’s final days, it was exceptional and thank you to Chaplain Adam Walker. In keeping with Pearl’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her family will celebrate her life at a later date.

Westoby, Marjorie Eliza – Passed peacefully at Creek Way Village in Burlington on Monday, January 8, 2018, surrounded by family, in her 102nd year. Beloved wife of the late William “Bill” and loving mother to Jane DeBoer (John) and Peter (Carol Smith). Grandmother to Alicia and Victoria DeBoer, Melissa Westoby (Don Russell), Ian Westoby (Francie Cozzarin) and great grandmother to Ella Russell. Sadly missed by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her 3 sisters; Helen Towns, Enid Towns and Martha Craig. Longtime resident of Dundas and McMaster University retiree. Friends will be received by the family on Thursday afternoon and evening from 2-4 & 7-9 at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas. The Funeral for Marjorie will be held Friday afternoon at 12 noon at KNOX PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, 23 Melville Street, Dundas. Cremation has taken place. Expressions of sympathy to Knox Presbyterian Church would be appreciated by the family.
