It is with great sadness that the family would like to announce the death of Alastair Ewen MacRury (Al to his friends). He passed away on Saturday, September 19, 2026 at Juravinski Hospital. Alastair was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1953 to parents Elizabeth MacRury and Rev. Ian MacRury both of whom hailed from North Uist, Scotland. As a young teen, he came to Canada with his family, settling in Saskatchewan and then later in Peterborough where his father was called to serve.
Alastair was the proud father of daughter Kiara and son Brendan (deceased). He will be sadly missed by his sister Marita MacRury Easton, cousins Anne Griffiths (Jonathan), and family , Malcolm MacRury (Julie) and family as well as numerous other cousins throughout the world.
Alastair was also the beloved Alpa to his grandchildren, Natalie Elizabeth Madill and Vanessa Sylvia Madill whom he adored and friend to their dad Tom. He remained friends with the mother of his children Jan Freeman and her partner Tom Waram. He also enjoyed friendly relations with the Freeman extended family.
Alastair had a 46 year career in journalism, having worked for six newspapers as a reporter and an editor. In his latter years, he wrote a column at The Spectator called Action Line which helped to resolve various consumer complaints. He ended his career writing a column advocating for people with disabilities. He could easily relate to their problems as he struggled with his own early onset blindness called retinitis pigmentosa.
Alastair continued to have an active life in his later years, despite his visual limitations. He had numerous friends from all walks of life whom he valued dearly.
There will be a visitation followed by a memorial service and refreshments at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St. in Dundas, Ontario on Friday, September 25 at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Alastair memory are invited to make a donation to Fighting Blindness Canada or to a charity of their choice.

So very sad to learn of my big cousin Alasdair’s death. As a boy, he was fearless and as an adult he lived and enjoyed life to the full despite his blindness.
Proud of Scottish hebridean heritage, he loved his last visit to Scotland, including North Uist ….. and of course his beloved Castle Tioram.
