Bruce Douglas Smith, affectionately known as Doug, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026 in Hamilton, Ontario, at the age of 84.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Sandra Isabel Smith; his sons, John Douglas Smith (Amy) and Scott Curtis Smith (Deborah, Debbie); his grandchildren, Joshua, Alec, Frances and Owen, sister-in-law, Sherry O’Keefe, brothers-in-law, Gord Dean and Bill Dimmick, his nieces and nephews, and all those whose lives who were touched by his kindness and humour. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Margaret Smith, sister, Ruth Dimmick, and sister in-law, Lynda Dean.
Born on August 27, 1941 in Hamilton, Ontario, Doug spent his life deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. He pursued higher education at McMaster University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree—an academic foundation that would support a lifelong dedication to teaching and mentorship.
Doug devoted his professional life to education as a physical education, and grades 6, 7 and 8 teacher in the elementary schools of Hamilton, Dundas, and Greensville. His passion for sports was evident in his enthusiastic coaching of basketball and volleyball. Doug’s commitment to youth development and community involvement was recognized in 2022 when he received the Hamilton Person of Distinction honour—a testament to the positive impact he made throughout his career.
Beyond the classroom and gymnasium, Doug found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer and fisherman who cherished time spent outdoors. After retirement, he and his beloved wife, Sandra enjoyed winters together in Edgewater, Florida where Doug continued to fish and golf under sunny skies.
Doug’s warmth extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. He had a gift for bringing people together with laughter and light-heartedness. Whether among friends or family, he was always ready with a joke and a smile—his way of making every gathering brighter.
May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire joy in the lives he touched. A Visitation will be held on January 8, 2026 at 10a.m. followed by a Service at 11a.m. at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St. Dundas, Ontario.
My deepest condolences Sandra and family as you grieve your loss.
I have many good memories when living in the neighborhood when walking my dog Mya and Doug always had a little treat for her and we had our chats.
Thinking of you during this difficult time.
This saddens me. I knew Doug (and Sandra) through my former in-laws and absolutely adore them both. My heart goes out to Sandra, their boys, and all their loved ones.
My sincerest condolences to the Smith family. I attended Hamilton Teachers’ College with Doug and later had the privilege and enjoyment of working with him at Spencer Valley Senior Public School. His dry sense of humour and wry comments gave those of us who worked with him many a laugh. There was no pretense, what you saw with Doug, was what you got. He will be missed.
I’m so sorry to hear of Doug’s death, Sandra. My condolences to you and your family. Although I never met him, every time you spoke of him you lit up! I knew he was a special guy – and the two of you together had some great adventures and touched many hearts. I especially loved hearing stories of your times down south! May your many memories offer comfort in the midst of the inevitable sadness.
Oh Sandra. My favourite aunt, I am truly sorry for this incredible loss. Uncle Doug was such an incredible man. You both always had such open arms & warm hearts. Doug was always so patient & kind with me. Always had great hugs & an incredible laugh. I truly love you both so much. I hope to see & to hold you soon.
I will always be grateful for the snacks & movies in your living room when my grandparents said “no” & Doug always said “Yes”
I know Nanny is welcoming him with open arms & Deedee is jealous as he takes the attention away from her ♡♡♡

Dear Sandra, John, Scott and families,
It is with a sad heart that I learn of Doug’s passing. There are so many memories of growing up in the west end and our families visiting back and forth. We have not seen each other much over our adult years but when we did the conversations were always fun and full of life. Doug will be missed.
My thoughts and prayers go with you during this very difficult time.
