Dr. Graeme MacQueen died at home in Dundas from cancer on April 25, in the loving presence of his wife and daughter, Sharon and Jessica. He leaves behind his brother Ken and sisters Meg and Lorna.
After graduating with a Ph.D. from Harvard, he joined the Dept. of Religious Studies at McMaster, where he taught Asian religion to thousands of students, being honoured for excellence in teaching by the McMaster Student Union. He established the Centre for Peace Studies, and was involved in peace-building activities in different war zones. After retirement, he dedicated his research to a critique of the foundations of the War on Terror. Graeme had friends all over the world, and was appreciated for his creativity, courage, and dedication to peace and justice. The family will hold a private memorial in celebration of his life.
Graeme was a dedicated peace activist and an amazing story teller. He was a great gift to the world. My sincerest condolences toall his loved ones.
Graeme was a person of rare intelligence, integrity, and courage. I was lucky enough to meet him as a student at McMaster and luckier still to work with him on a community development project in Hamilton. I have never met anyone so committed to the causes of peace, justice, and ecological sustainability. He will be dearly missed, but his work will continue to inspire for years to come.
And the special spirit manifest in Journey to the City of Six Gates. A literary gem.
My condolences to all of Graeme’s family. I know how much you loved and admired him. Although I didn’t have the chance to know him myself I do know something of the impact he had on students and peace activists in Hamilton. His life enriched the lives of many. Blessings to you in this time of loss.
My deepest condolences to Graeme’s family. I cherish fond memories of Graeme visiting us in our home in Delhi. He was instrumental in inviting me to teach a course on Gandhi at Peace Studies, McMaster University – in the summer semesters of 1993 & 1994. I recall vividly his passion for promoting peace and justice – which I shared. He was a great peace activist as well as an erudite scholar and teacher. I learned much from him; from our stimulating discussions with the Hamilton Peace Group. Farewell, dear friend, philosopher & guide!
