April 8, 1944 – June 26, 2020
Al was a born educator who through his profession with the HWDSB strove to ignite a love for learning in students. Upon retirement he pursued his hobbies of golf, fishing, curling, skiing and riding his motorcycle. Al easily engaged anyone he met in conversation. He was a Past Master of the Lodge of Strict Observance. He loved and was loved by his wife Brenda. Al’s pride and joy were his children Rick (Jackie) and Donna (Buck). Memory maker and adored Grandpa of his grandchildren Reilly, Jake, Trevor, Jessica, Shaelyn, Ainslie and Connor. He will be mourned by his sister Lee (Michael) Creal, brother Norm (Emma) Kunc, brother-in-law Jim (Mary) Grandy and his nephews and nieces. Brother-in-law of Wanda and Peter Olsen. Al’s circle of friends reached far and wide and his presence will be missed. A heartfelt thank you to the team of healthcare workers who guided and cared for Al with compassion and always gave us hope. To our friends and neighbours who supported us – when days were dark you brought us into the light. A private celebration of Al’s well lived life will be held. If you choose, a donation can be made in Al’s memory to City Kidz or your favourite charity.
Al was one of a kind, he always made you feel welcome and called you his friend.
He will be sorely missed by his golfing buddies who held him in high regard. I know they will
miss cheering him on to find that 4 wood he lost three years ago. I am sure St. Pete will give him a new set of clubs in heaven.
My two sons Colin and Warren who were taught by Alex and my wife Judy wish his family peace through these trying times.
God Bless

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Al. I met Al through my connection with Brenda at Rousseau School many years ago. We spent numerous evenings together over the years enjoying a game of bridge with a few teacher/ principal colleagues. Most of the time it was about getting caught up with Board gossip or talking sports. I valued Al’s wisdom and valued his mentorship as I was beginning my new career as a principal with HWDSB. He was always thoughtful, respectful and caring to the people he met. While time had sent us apart, I always had fond memories of our times together. I will truly miss him! All the best to your family Brenda, Rick and Donna.
Dear Mrs. Kunc, Rick and Donna,
I would like to extend my deepest condolences for your loss. Mr.Kunc was the true definition of family man.
Thinking of you at this time.

Mr. Kunc was my grade six/seven music teacher at Norwood Park in Hamilton, way back when. He was young, just starting out as a teacher, proud of his family and always telling stories of his young children.
I’m sorry to hear of his death, I think of him sometimes and remember him as such a kind man.
