May 2, 1929 – February 21, 2019

YORK, Charles Murray – Passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital on Thursday, February 21, 2019, at the age of 89.  For over 60 years, Murray was the beloved husband of Effie who passed away in 2013.  He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter Sheelagh Boin (Louis), and his grandchildren David, Jordan, Christian, and Jacqueline.  Predeceased by his dear son David John, his loving parents Charles and Muriel, dear Aunts Bev, Kay and Jess, and his cousin Barry Base.  He will be greatly missed by his nieces Gayle Gregory (Greg) and Karen Hyatt (Bev), and his nephew Bruce Gregory. Murray was the Principal Cost Accountant at International Harvester for over 30 years.  He enjoyed a long and happy retirement during which time he became a tour guide at The Hamilton Spectator for more than a decade. Murray was a faithful and active member of Westdale United Church of Hamilton and its community for many years devotedly helping Effie with whatever initiative she was organizing.  He was always supportive and was her behind the scenes partner in establishing Westdale/West Hamilton Seniors and Retirees.  Friends will be received by the family at WESTDALE UNITED CHURCH, 99 North Oval, Hamilton on Saturday, March 9 from 10 a.m. until the Celebration of Murray’s Life at 11:00 a.m.  Private family committal at a later date.  Many thanks to the nurses and staff at both Christopher Terrace in Burlington and Aberdeen Gardens in Hamilton for their loving care, the doctors and nurses at Joseph Brant Hospital for their professional and compassionate attention, as well as Dr. Sharon Marr for kindness and support over the years.  In lieu of flowers, donations to the Hamilton/Burlington SPCA or to Westdale United Church would be appreciated by the family.

Murray was a part of my daily life during my first 15 years living in Westdale. I would find him tending his tomatoes or trimming his hedge as I walked my dog. He was the type of neighbour who, when circumstances had caused him to miss our daily chat, would walk by my house to apologize. My condolences to the family on Murray’s passing. I will continue to think of him when I pass the house.

We were so saddened to hear about Murray’s passing. We were hoping to visit him now that he was in Burlington. We have such fond memories of Murray and Effie during their time spent with Sheelagh in their horse and saddle club years. There was never anyone who could come close to Effie’s baking when they ran the food booth at Cedar Valley Riders shows and they were always up for the dances and get-togethers as well. Sheelagh, please know that we are thinking of you and your family at this time.

My father rode to work with Murray for many years at Harvester; and I tagged along for the summer that I worked there. I enjoyed the yellow Datsun; and eavesdropping on their conversations.
Every year there would be a large Christmas painting in the front window at 154 Parkview.

My condolences to Sheelagh and her family

    Dear Gayle,
Remembering you from our Pioneer days when we lived on Lawrence and the Gregory family on Martin. I met Effie through The Lupus Society where she was very active and we kept in touch for many years. Also used to see her and Murray at the Pioneer Fall Bazaar when your Mom and I were still involved.
Thinking of you with sympathy and kind thoughts. Marilyn Mac Phail, Cornwall, Prince Edward Island.

I’m so sorry to hear of Murray’s passing. I first met him and Effie through Central United Church many years ago. He was always such a gentleman. I know I haven’t seen him for quite a few years now but also remember seeing him at Hamilton Spectator giving tours.
My thoughts are with Gayle and Karen whom I haven’t seen for many years now.
    Sincerely, Jane (Moore) Johnson
