It is with profound sadness that the family of James (Jim) Robert Sherring announces his peaceful passing on April 8, 2025, at Margaret’s Place in Dundas.
Born July 15, 1942, to John and Mary (née Rankin) Sherring, Jim was a man of loyalty, generosity, and quick wit. Jim married the love of his life, Brenda (née Podetz), and together they forged a home built on laughter, adventure, and deep devotion. Though Brenda predeceased him, Jim carried her memory close—sharing tales of their travels, family celebrations, and quiet moments that defined their partnership.
A proud father, Jim is survived by his children—Jeff Sherring, Leah Sherring (Virgil) and Jackie Mazzoni (Bill)—and by his cherished grandchildren Olivia, Grace, Gabrielle, Brenna, and Dora. The family is especially grateful for Jim’s loving role as a father figure to Olivia, Grace, and Gabrielle, guiding them with patience and pride. He treasured his monthly get-togethers with siblings Greg (predeceased Dianne), Mary Jane (Bill), Joe, and Colleen, and fondly remembered those who went before him: Carol (Ronnie), Gloria (Ray), and Janet (Nelson). His loss will also be deeply felt by his brothers and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews, all of whom benefited from his warmth, brazen sense of humour, and the pride he took in family gatherings.
Jim’s service to his country began when he joined the Royal Canadian Navy as an Able Seaman. Aboard the HMCS Fort Erie he forged lifelong friendships and developed a profound respect for his shipmates. Following his naval career, Jim dedicated 30 years to Dofasco, earning the admiration of colleagues and management alike for his integrity, work ethic, and steady leadership.
A devoted member of Royal Canadian Legion Branch #36, Jim’s absence among his comrades will be keenly felt. He enjoyed sharing stories, raising a glass, and offering support to fellow veterans. At home, he started each day with a coffee and The Spec crossword. He delighted in tending his garden, feeding the chickens, and tinkering in the barn—simple pleasures that brought him peace and satisfaction.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Audrey Chan, Jim’s family doctor and palliative care physician, whose compassion and expertise brought him comfort in his final days. Special thanks to Andrea Loft, lifelong friend of “Jake” whose timely call to action ensured Jim and his family received the care they needed during his last weeks, days, and hours. Jim passed with his dedicated brother, Greg, by his side. Appreciation is also due to the teams from Ontario Health at Home—nurses, respiratory therapists, PSWs, EMTs, the Voyago patient transport service, and the team at Margaret’s Place, all of whom demonstrated kindness and professionalism throughout his care.
There will be a Celebration of Life held in honour of our dad at the Dundas Legion Branch 36 on Saturday, April 26, 1:00-4:00 p.m., beginning with a Legion Service at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 or Hospice Care at Margaret’s Place in Jim’s memory. His spirit—anchored by service, family, and friendship—will continue to guide and inspire all who knew him.
John Stevenson passed away on Saturday, April 5th at age 88. For well over 50 years the fortunate husband of Ann. Brother to Judy and Jane and Father of four remarkable children – son, Ashley and daughters, Nicola, Julia and Philippa. As well as ‘Taid’ to grandchildren – Dana, Cameron, Dylan, Cayley, Nathan, Grady, Avery and Addison. A longtime educator with the Wentworth County Board of Education (Teacher, Principal, Superintendent) he was also a longtime member of the Rotary Club of Dundas (Paul Harris Fellow as well as Past-President).
John will be fondly remembered for his sharp wit and inquisitive nature, his passion for travel, chocolate, and his cherished family. He fought a long and hard battle to extend his time with loved ones for as long as he could.
We would also like to thank all of John’s caregivers, especially Veronica (Vee), Kanmi, and Tanya who treated John like their own father. We are eternally grateful.
A Celebration of Life will take place at the Dundas Valley Golf & Curling Club on Saturday, April 12th from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm with speeches and readings (speakers and stories welcome!). For those that can’t attend the celebration there will also be a Visitation at the Turner Family Funeral Home (53 Main St. Dundas) on Friday, April 11th from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The family of Merton Alvin Hambly is saddened, but with a measure of relief, to announce that “Mert” died peacefully in his 92nd year, a week after suffering a debilitating stroke.
Merton was born July 4th, 1933 in Wiarton, Ontario to Alvin and Marie Hambly. His parents moved to Dundas when he was a young boy where he attended school and played goalie for hockey and lacrosse teams.
Mert met the love of his life, Evelyn, on a blind date in Grimsby. Love blossomed as they sped off in his Morris Minor toward what turned out to be a 73 year long journey.
Mert joined his father at Hambly Construction, building custom family homes and buildings in the Dundas area. He then followed his dream and started his own fibreglass manufacturing business creating unique motor homes and various truck parts. He was a creative wood craftsman constructing grandmother clocks, furniture, and artistic pieces for special people in his life.
Mert was always willing to help and if he saw something needed doing, he got it done. He filled many roles at St. Paul’s United Church, was a charter member and multi-year president of the Greensville Optimist Club, and established the Dundas Modular Railway Club. He found time to host Hobbyfest, the church Breakfast Club, and Robbie Burns night among his many, many other activities. In recent years, Mert looked forward to his weekly coffee chats with his Optimist and Train Club friends. He was a Formula One car racing enthusiast. There wasn’t much he didn’t know about it, from building the cars to racing strategy.
Merton is survived by his wife, Evelyn, children Cindy (Bill) and Craig (Jennifer), grandchildren Victoria (Stephen), Spencer, Derek (Haley), Kent (Emma), and Riley (Kenna), great-grandchildren Henry and Charlotte. He is pre-deceased by his sister, Dorothy Marie Allan (Robert).
Mert’s family wish to express their sincere appreciation to the caring and empathetic health care teams at Hamilton General and St. Peter’s Palliative Care Hospitals.
A funeral service will be held at St. Paul’s United Church in Dundas on Friday, April 11th, at 11:00 a.m. Reception to follow in the church parlour.

Peacefully at St. Peter’s Hospital on Monday, March 31, 2025 in his 102nd year. Beloved husband of the late Mary (nee Gibson). Loving father to Doug (Debby) and Bob. Grandfather to Mark (Alex), Mike (Carrie), Thad (Melissa), Adam and Alana. Great-Grandfather to Tyson, Rylee, Kamryn, Tanner and Kenzie. Predeceased by his 2 brothers; Wally and Ralph. Roger had a 40 year career with Bell Canada, mostly as a Quality Control Inspector. He was initiated as a Mason in 1958 at Meridian Lodge, Joined the Hamilton Sovereign Chapter of Rose Croix (1965), Installed as a Worshipful Master of Meridian Lodge (1969), Installed as District Deputy Grand Master – Hamilton District C in 1977, Past Thrice Puissant Grand Master of Murton Lodge of Perfection (1984-85), Received his 33rd Degree at Supreme Council in Windsor (1987), Grand Secretary Emeritus – Moore Sovereign Consistory (Scottish Rite), Member of the Royal Order of Scotland. Roger was a member of the Hamilton Shrine Club. He was longtime member of St. Mark’s United Church, was a Charter member of the Dundas Probus Club. Friends will be received by the family at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St, Dundas, on Sunday, April 6, 2025 from 2-4pm. A Masonic Service will be held at 4pm. A Funeral Service will take place on Monday, April 7, 2025 at 11:30am. at St. Mark’s United Church, 1 Lynndale Drive, Dundas. Interment at Grove Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
On March 29, 2025 we lost one from “the greatest generation.” Don Walker passed away peacefully at Highgate Residence in Ancaster. He is survived by children David (Jag), Robert (Deborah), and Cynthia (Craig); and grandchildren Simon (Kirsten), Alexander, Angela (Derek), Ian (Sarah), William, and Emma. Don is joining his beloved wife Georgina (deceased 2024) and brothers and sisters-in-law Alexander and Morrison, and William and Joyce.
During WWII, Don followed his older brothers into the Canadian Armed Forces when he was old enough. After the war, Don met Gina, the love of his life, on a blind date. He spent many years working for British-American Petroleum, later Gulf Oil, as a sales representative. After retirement, he and Gina traveled to Europe, the U.K., and Barbados. Don liked to tell jokes (“shaggy dogs”) and said he carried around a lot of useless information he didn’t get paid for. He always had an apt quote from the Bible, Shakespeare, or The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Dad was our head cheerleader, and loved hearing about the “goings-on” of his children and grandchildren.
