It is with great sadness that we share the loss of our dad, Mike Alkerton, in his 81st year. He peacefully left this world Monday, September 16 in the wonderful care of Margaret’s Place Hospice in Dundas after a long battle with COPD. Mike lived and died by his own terms, and he loved unconditionally.
Mike was true to his hometown Dundas where everyone knew him. Hockey was a big part of his life, he played with the Dundas Merchants and coached Dundas minor hockey and then played old timer hockey for many years. He loved playing golf with his buddies and they started the season every Good Friday, even in the snow!
Mike put his heart and soul into his club, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 36 Dundas, where he was a Life Member and on the Executive where he served 2 Presidential terms, and was Membership & Bursary Chairman for many years. Mike held a membership as Sergeant in the 11th field with the Hamilton Artillery Association.
Mike was a proud 50 year career member of the IBEW Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
He is survived by his loving wife Joan, his daughters Barb (Martin) & Lisa (Terry), granddaughter Becca (Richard), grandson Chris (Matt), brother Art (Jack), sister Brenda (Barry), and many extended family members and friends. Mike is predeceased by his brother Ken and sister Christine. We would like to thank so many people that supported Mike throughout the past 2 years with their kindness and compassion, and also his health care providers at St. Joseph’s Hospital Respirology team, Dr. Chan, his nurse Carly, the PSW’s, and the caring team at Margaret’s Place.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Margaret’s Place Hospice through St. Joseph’s Foundation or The Alzheimer Society of Canada.
There will be a Celebration of Life held in honour of our dad at the Dundas Legion Branch 36 on Saturday, October 26, 1:00-5:00 p.m., beginning with a Legion Service at 1:00 p.m..

My deepest sympathy to Joan and all the family! I’ve known Mike my entire life starting at St. Augustine’s in Grade 1. I can honestly say he had never changed, a busy and engaging personality. He will be missed.
RIP Mike
Deepest condolences to all Mike’s family. Mike was clearly a much loved member of the Dundas community and will be missed by many.
To Joan, Barbie and Lisa; my heart aches for you especially. I’ll be thinking of you through this tough time and holding you in my prayers. ❤️
My deepest heartfelt condolences to Joan, Barb and Lisa. Mike had and will always continue to have a special place in my heart for the time we had during my time with the family. Times at the Legion and especially times at Mike and Joan’s home and family gatherings. He will be sadly missed by all he touched. Thanks for the memories!! Rest peacefully!
So sorry to read of Mike’s death. We met Mike when his wife Joan moved to Dundas and worked at the TD Bank. I remember their first Legion dance where Joan wore a dazzling, long gown and wowed the crowd and left Mike speechless. After marriage, they celebrated New Year’s with steak and lobster at home for a romantic evening. Mike was such a great guy and friendly to all he met. He absolutely adored Joan and walked so proudly with her on his arm. His readiness to help others either at the Legion or at work or in the arena, made Mike such a popular guy. He will be missed by all of Dundas!
Joan, Barb, Lisa and family My sincerest condolences for the loss of an amazing father and husband. To my dearest friend Mike, I will truely miss our conversations, our coffee’s, the sound of your laugh and most of all your friendship. I also still have a note from you that I have kept and it is, to meet for coffee, so I will save it for the day when we meet again and we will definately have coffee… once again.Until then keep watch over me so I’m not such a clutz.
Love you Mike xxoo

I was so very sorry to hear this news. Mike was a friendly and fun presence in my life growing up. He did indeed live his life on his own terms. We can all aspire to that. My condolences to the family.
Joan, Barb & Lisa, & families. May Mike rest in peace. Such a huge loss for your family, friends, & Comrades of the Dundas Legion. He will truly be missed! He was a great mentor to myself & others! He always had the right answer! Never to be forgotten. Missed beyond words. Rest easy Mike.

I have known Mike since he was my NCO when I was in the 102 Battery in Dundas. A long-time acquaintance. He was a landmark around the Dundas arena.
