Bruce Douglas Smith, affectionately known as Doug, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2026 in Hamilton, Ontario, at the age of 84.

He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 59 years, Sandra Isabel Smith; his sons, John Douglas Smith (Amy) and Scott Curtis Smith (Deborah, Debbie); his grandchildren, Joshua, Alec, Frances and Owen, sister-in-law, Sherry O’Keefe, brothers-in-law, Gord Dean and Bill Dimmick, his nieces and nephews, and all those whose lives who were touched by his kindness and humour. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Bruce and Margaret Smith, sister, Ruth Dimmick, and sister in-law, Lynda Dean.

Born on August 27, 1941 in Hamilton, Ontario, Doug spent his life deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. He pursued higher education at McMaster University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree—an academic foundation that would support a lifelong dedication to teaching and mentorship.

Doug devoted his professional life to education as a physical education, and grades 6, 7 and 8 teacher in the elementary schools of Hamilton, Dundas, and Greensville. His passion for sports was evident in his enthusiastic coaching of basketball and volleyball. Doug’s commitment to youth development and community involvement was recognized in 2022 when he received the Hamilton Person of Distinction honour—a testament to the positive impact he made throughout his career.

Beyond the classroom and gymnasium, Doug found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid golfer and fisherman who cherished time spent outdoors. After retirement, he and his beloved wife, Sandra enjoyed winters together in Edgewater, Florida where Doug continued to fish and golf under sunny skies.

Doug’s warmth extended far beyond his professional accomplishments. He had a gift for bringing people together with laughter and light-heartedness. Whether among friends or family, he was always ready with a joke and a smile—his way of making every gathering brighter.

May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him and continue to inspire joy in the lives he touched. A Visitation will be held on January 8, 2026 at 10a.m. followed by a Service at 11a.m. at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St. Dundas, Ontario. Loving mother to Barbara Irving, Patricia Jackson (Navdeep Pooni) and Andrew Jackson (Julie Alati-it). Affectionately known as Nana or Nani by her four grandsons Oakley, Delsen, Cayden and Reid. Dear sister of late William Anderson (late Lyndsay) and aunt to Michael (Donna) and Douglas (Lynn) and their families in Atlanta, Georgia.

Mary was raised in Westdale where she attended high school and McMaster University before training as a Registered Nurse at the Hamilton General Hospital – class of ‘54B.  Mary’s long and successful nursing career began in the maternity ward at the Henderson Hospital and ended with retiring from Wentworth Lodge, as Director of Nursing in 1990.

The family would like to thank the many people who supported Mom, especially in her last days. The love, devotion, kindness and generosity of the nursing staff will forever be remembered.
