August 29, 1919 – September 5, 2019
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Martha Veldhuis in her 101st year. She passed away peacefully on September 5th, 2019 at St. Joseph’s Villa, Dundas, Ontario. Martha will be welcomed into heaven by her Lord and Saviour, her late brothers Ben, Keith, and Hans, and their late wives, Marika, Jesse, Lucille, and Eleanor. She will be sadly missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Martha was born on August 29, 1919 in Almelo, Holland to parents Maria and Jan Veldhuis. At the age of seven, Martha and her family immigrated to Canada and settled in Ontario. When World War II began, Martha joined the Dutch Military, where she drove an ambulance in Indonesia. Upon returning to Canada, Martha attended Bible College. After receiving her degree, she moved to Northern Ontario where she worked in children’s missions. In 1959, Martha returned to Hamilton and took up a post at her brother’s greenhouse in Dundas. Here, she headed up the retail sales branch of the family business, where she worked until her retirement. Martha was always blessed with “the gift of gab” and had the incredible ability to meld her love of scripture and her love of plants. She spent many years spreading the good word throughout Ontario to countless audiences. Martha was a long-time member of Philpott Memorial Church in Hamilton. Arrangements have been entrusted to Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St, Dundas where visitation will take place Tuesday, Sept 10th at 11am, with the funeral service directly following at 12pm. Many, many thanks to the PSW’s, nurses, support staff, and doctors on the 2nd floor of Maple Grove, St. Joseph’s Villa. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Philpott Memorial Church.
She was a wonderful woman and will be sadly missed. Condolences from Jessie Verduyn
Hi There, Along life’s journey we meet many good and kind people. I will never forget the day I met Martha at Philpott Church. After we all sang the favourite hymn “But I know whom I have Believed” , there was Martha and she said to me, “make sure you know whom you believe” Wow!, a true Christian Soldier for the Lord. Her love of sharing the word of God and how plants are related made it so easy for the rest of us to understand. “A great lady Indeed”
Today, I am sending along thoughts and prayers for all of Martha’s family, May you all find comfort in remembering your good times. Sorry for your Loss
Dear Family of Martha, I have been so blessed to hear Martha speak at several times at Ladies coffee hour. To hear her speak of the riches of her faith and the beauty of God’s creation has certainly enriched my life, and of many others!
May our Lord comfort, and strengthen you in the days ahead.
She was a great lady. I delivered her mail at the Villa on Monday’s and we always had a little chat. I shall miss that
Condolences to all the family
I got to know Martha in 2012 when I picked up books and other Christian literature from her appartment as a driver for Christian Salvage Mission. Little did I know at that time that that first visit would turn into a seven year friendship. The last year or so we would often, at her request, converse in Dutch. After my last visit on Tuesday, September 3, 2019 I knew that soon she would be Home.
I’m going to miss my regular visits with this Godly Lady.
My condolences to the family of Martha Veldhuis.May her soul rest in peace.
Aunt Martha was my Great Aunt she will be missed by all of us here and thanks for all the beautiful comments 🙂 God bless you all
