March 18, 1939 – December 27, 2018

Passed away peacefully at Peel Manor in Brampton in her 80th year. Loving mother to William, Diane, Wendy and Andrew. Caring grandmother to 7 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Norma will be sadly missed by all that knew her. Friends and family are invited to Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas on Wednesday January 2nd from 2-4p.m. & 7-9p.m.. Murray, Diana Lynne

June 7, 1955 – December 23, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Diana Lynne Murray, age 63, on December 23, 2018 peacefully at her home in Dundas, Ontario. Lynne will be lovingly remembered by her sons Nathan (Nicola) and Brad (Ashley), her mother Verna, her brother Bill (Karen), her sister Kelly (Wayne), her niece Chantelle, her mother and father-in-law Bill and Alice, and her partner Ian.  She will also be forever remembered by her extended family and many dear friends. Lynne is preceded in death by her husband Mark and her father William.

Born in Camp Shilo, Manitoba, Lynne was the eldest daughter of William and Verna (Marshall) Laur. She spent her childhood in Lahr, Germany with her family and new found friends she affectionately called her “army brats”, with whom she kept in touch her entire life.  After moving back to Dundas in 1973 and graduating from Parkside High School, she married Mark Murray in 1980 and raised her two precious sons.  After the death of her husband in 2009, she again found love and spent the last three years of her life with Ian Rockall.

She worked at Shoppers Drug Mart for 31 years where she displayed a wonderful ability to brighten the lives of her customers and colleagues.  Lynne truly lived life to the fullest, enjoying time with her family, friends, and animals while at home or travelling.  She will always be remembered for her selflessness, generosity and infectious laugh. The grace, dignity and strength she displayed during her illness remain an inspiration to those who carry her in their hearts. A special thank you to Ian for his loving care and support of Lynne during her final days.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 5, 2019 at 2:00 pm at Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas, Ontario.

Murray, Philip David

September 25,  1948 – December 24, 2018

With heavy hearts, on Monday December 24, 2018, in his 70th year, we said goodbye.Beloved husband of Linda, loving father of Karen (Rick), Cheryl (Jeff), Susan (John),  grandfather of Jordan, Andy, Brian, Curtis, Arwyn and Owen. Much loved by his siblings Carol, Allen (Marjolaine), Leonard (Rebecca) and many nieces and nephews.  Previously deceased by his brother Kenny and his parents James and Della. Phil will be remembered by all as a man with a great sense of humour and desire to entertain others. He was a comedian until the end, referring to his time at the hospital as “Hotel General.” We are incredibly thankful to the wonderful staff at Hamilton General Hospital 4West and CCU for the care and compassion shown to him.  A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday December 30th at the Hamilton Police Association (555 Upper Wellington St, Hamilton, ON) between 2-4pm if you would like to join us in a tribute to him. As an expression of sympathy, donations can be made to the Cardiac Care Unit of Hamilton General Hospital.

Weiss, Charles Francis “Charlie”

April 18, 1930 – December 21, 2018

Weiss, Charles Francis – Charlie passed away peacefully at Wentworth Lodge on Friday, December 21, 2018 in his 89th year.  Beloved husband of Ferne for 67 years. Loving father of Paul (Lisbeth) and Steve (Brenda).  Doting grandfather of 5 grandchildren Adam (Kirsten), Stephanie, Kimberly (Dan), Geoff (Jaclyn) and Rochelle (Kyle) and 9 great-grandchildren Declan, Kali, Charlotte, Abigail, Ben, Emmy, Elliot, Jonah and Lucy.  Valued friend to anyone who knew him.  Predeceased by siblings Eldon, Raymond and Beverly. He always had a smile on his face and never complained.  Charlie loved golf and was a member of the Hole-in-One club.  He was a runner and health fanatic long before it was fashionable.  He enjoyed 33 years of retirement after working at Mohawk College as the Director of Administration Services.  Special thanks to Dr. Anna Emili and the staff at Wentworth Lodge for their exemplary care and compassion.  Friends will be received by the family on Saturday morning, December 29th, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Charlie’s service at 11:30 a.m. at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas.  Cremation has already taken place and a private interment will be scheduled for a later date.  Donations to the Alzheimer Society or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.

Rivers, Frank Edward

Rivers, Frank Edward Thomas

April 26, 1925 – December 21, 2018

Frank was predeceased by his beloved Ruth, wife of 67 years.  Caring father to Douglas (Linda) and Ruthanne.  Grandfather to Lynda (Chad), Cindy, Tara, Jennifer (Adrian), Leanne (Dennis) and Elaine (James).  Great-grandfather to 15.  Frank was a proud Veteran of the Second World War, serving with the RCNVR aboard H.M.C.S Joliette.  He was a skilled carpenter by trade, and worked at Otis Elevator until his retirement in 1987.  Dad was a long-time member of the Hamilton Stamp Club, The Steel Workers Organization of Active Retirees (S.O.A.R), a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 36 in Dundas, and up until two weeks before his passing he enjoyed swimming twice a week at Dalewood Pool, for over 33 years!.  He will always be remembered for his great sense of humor and his dedication and love for his family.  Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 27th from 2-4 and 7-9, with Legion Service at 7:00, at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street Dundas where Frank’s Service will be held on Friday, December 28th at 1:00 p.m.  A celebration of Frank’s life will be held Sunday, January 13th at the Dundas Legion, 280 King Street West from 1-4 p.m.  In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 36 would be appreciated.

Hamstra, Grace (nee Zylstra)

September 28, 1925 – December 22, 2018

HAMSTRA, Grace (nee Zylstra) – The Lord, in His infinite wisdom, took unto Himself our loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great grandmother on Saturday, December 22, 2018 in her 94th year.  Dear wife, for 67 years, of the late Jacob Hamstra. Cherished mother of Jerry and Trudy Hamstra, Sylvia and Carl Schouls, Audrey and Albert Wassink, Elizabeth and George Bouwmeester and Kathy and Ray Pennings. Predeceased by all  her brothers and sisters; Joekje (Pieter)  Miedema, Gauke (Tine) Zylstra, Eelkje (Gosse) Postma  and Willem (Rieke) Zylstra.  A loving sister-in-law to the late Kathleen Hamstra,  the late Gerald & Theresa Hamstra,  the late  Ralph & Jeanette Haalstra, Peter & Audrey Hamstra and Peter & Willy VandenBerg.  Our dear mother will be remembered as one who took a great interest in all that her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren did. They all loved her in return. We as a family sincerely thank the staff of Shalom Manor in Grimsby for their loving care for our mother. Family and friends will be received at the Ebenezer Free Reformed Church, 253 Weirs Lane, Dundas, Ontario on Thursday, December 27, 2018, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Ebenezer Free Reformed Church on Friday, December 28th at 10 a.m.  Interment to follow at Mt. MacDonald, Ethel Mae (nee Hamilton)

August 6, 1941 – December 17, 2018

With profound sadness and loving hearts, we said goodbye to wife and mother, Ethel Mae (Hamilton) MacDonald on December 17, 2018. Ethel passed away peacefully at the Juravinski Hospital at the age of 77 years, following a courageous battle with cancer.

She leaves behind her soulmate and husband, Richard MacDonald, her devoted daughters, Cheryl (David) and Heather (Jamie) and her beloved grandchildren, Rhys and Norah. Her brother-in-law, David and sister-in-law, Theresa as well as her nieces and nephews, John, Carol, Bob, Kathryn, Tom, James and Jennifer will also miss her greatly.

Ethel enjoyed a wonderful and rewarding career in education, as a Family Studies teacher and later as Head of Department at several schools including Dundas District High School and Highland Secondary School. She was a dedicated and much-loved teacher.

Ethel was an active member of the Canadian Federation of University Women – Hamilton, serving on the Executive for many years including the role of President. She also was a long-time member of Grace Lutheran Church, serving in a variety of roles including Chair of the Worship Committee, a member of the Church Council and Lay Assistant for Sunday services.

In her spare time, Ethel loved being in the outdoors, either at the family farm on the Manitoulin Island or walking in the beautiful conservation areas in the Dundas Valley. She loved animals including her three dogs, Bryer, Jake and Lucy. She also enjoyed gardening, travel and attending local cultural events.

Thank you to Dr. Emili, Dr. Myers, Dr. Forbes, Dr. Serrano and Dr. Whitton, along with all the compassionate and supportive staff at the Juravinski Hospital. Their care and expertise helped extend Ethel’s life and we are grateful for the time we had with her.

Ethel cared deeply about education, particularly the education of girls and women as well as the natural environment. Memorial donations can be made to the Canadian Federation of University Women – Hamilton Scholarship Fund or the Hamilton Conservation Foundation.

Family and friends will gather at Grace Lutheran Church, 1107 Main Street West, Hamilton, on Friday, December 28, 2018 for a service at 2 pm celebrating Ethel’s life followed by a reception from 3-5 pm in Grace Hall, adjoining the church. All who knew Ethel are invited to join us for the service and/or reception.

Wickens, Gordon Douglas

Peacefully, with his family by his side, on Monday, December 17, 2018, in his 90th year. Predeceased by his loving wife of 55 years, Thelma (2005). Missed and loved dearly by Betty Verrall. Much loved Dad of Clyde (Janice) and Stephen (Traci). Cherished Grandpa of Michael, Kaitlyn, Jeremy and Amanda. Survived by his brother Stanley (Ann) and family. Predeceased by his parents, Sydney and Edna Wickens. Gordon started his electrical career with Dynes Electric. he and Thelma raised their boys in Carlisle, where he was a Scout Leader and member of the Sertoma Club, before moving to St. Catharines for his career with Ontario Hydro. They retired to Dundas, where he enjoyed volunteering at the RBG. Gord will fondly be remembered for his love of family, sailing, dogs, growing tomatoes and sharing good times with family and friends. Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.

Phillips, Patricia Irene “Pat” (nee Vollick)

August 31, 1940 – December 17, 2018

Phillips, Patricia Irene “Pat” (nee Vollick) – Passed away peacefully at home with her loving daughter Lori-Ann by her side.  Predeceased by her loving husband and soul mate, Thomas Allan Phillips “Tom” (2010).  Pat will be remembered always by her grandchildren Lily and Thomazyna “Zya”; godchildren Joyce and Jamie and many in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  A special thank you to her sister-in-law, Carol who was at Pat’s bedside on many occasions.  Thank you also to Dr. West, Dr. Raza and to the many staff at the Juravinski Hospital for their care and compassion.  Friends will be received by the family on Thursday evening from 6-9 at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas.  A Service for Pat will take place at the Church of the Ascension, 64 Forest Ave., Hamilton on Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.  Interment Grove Cemetery.  Expressions of sympathy to the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Mann, Sheila Marie

July 11, 1936 – December 12, 2018

Mann, Sheila Marie – It is with great sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Sheila at St. Peter’s Residence on Wednesday, December 12th, 2018.  Daughter of the late Colin and Merne Mann.  Devoted sister of the late Lorene (Willis) Thompson and Barry (Faye) Mann.  Caring and generous Aunt of several nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.  Sheila loved the family farm, gardening and she was devoted to giving to others, especially those in need.  She was a teacher for over 40 years, had her pilot’s licence and taught and travelled around the world.  She was always eager to share her life lessons and loved to tell jokes.  Sheila had many dear friends who were a big part of her life.  A big thanks to Josie and also the staff at St. Peter’s Nursing Home.  Donations can be made to the Good Shepherd Centre.  A private celebration of life will be held in the New Year.
