William Newton, Bill died at the Hamilton General Hospital, on Saturday, July 20, 2013. He is survived by his wife Jeanette (Jo) of 47 years, daughter Monique, sister Terri and her family, as well as many cherished family and friends, and Dormie, his beloved Australian shepherd. Bill was co-founder and executive director of the Stanley Thompson Society and enjoyed five decades as an established graphic designer, winning national and international awards for his work. We will remember Bill best in his garden, ruminating on his creative – if somewhat unfinished – garden projects. And admiring his wildflowers. A Celebration of Bill’s life with his friends and colleagues will be held in early autumn. A Funeral Service will be held at the Cattel, Eaton & Chambers Funeral Home, 53 Main Street, Dundas, on Wednesday, July 24th at 11a.m. A burial will take place on Thursday, July 25th for the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stanley Thompson Foundation for educational support (www.stanleythompsonsociety.com).
I am at loss for words. Bill always seemed invincible. His passing is a great loss to all the LPSS Alumnus.
My sincere condolences to Bill’s wife and family. I have so many fond memories of him from our high school years.

I can’t even imagine a world without Bill and his unique contributions to the universe and everything.
Courage in the face of this loss.
A very sad passing, a brilliant mind and a wry sense of humour gone all too soon. Can’t be there tomorrow, Jo, but will be thinking of you.
As a Director at the Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club, I had the great good fortune to meet Bill and serve with him on many committees. He was an indefatigable proponent of the club, and to witness his brilliant mind produce ideas for its advancement as a proud example of a “Thompson Course” is indeed memorable. Bill touched a great deal at that place and, as a example, I will never look at that magnolia tree on the MacArthur Terrace without thinking of how it fit into Bill’s grand scheme of things. Bill Newton… RIP.
We never did meet, nor did we speak on the phone, however, Bill will go down as a great friend who published some articles of mine, at a time in my life when I needed such affirmation. I join with his many friends in extending to his family my sincere condolences and deepest sympathy.

Dear Terri and Jo and family,
I have so many wonderful memories of Bill and the time he spent with our family over the decades; such a creative, warm, and passionate person who has left us so soon; my prayers are with you during these sad hours and I know that he will be deeply missed.
Jeanette, our sincere condolences to you and your family. Our thoughts are certainly with you as you cope with this difficult time of loss. Bill’s hospitality, wit and keen mind left an enduring, and endearing, memory after even a brief visit with Gord to your home. And Gordie thoroughly enjoyed his subsequent conversations with Bill.
On behalf of the Highlands Links Stanley Thompson Historical Society I would like to send our sincere condolences to Bill’s wife and family. From the inception of our work to create the Stanley Thompson memorial statue that sits today on the grounds of Cape Breton Highlands Links, Bill was a huge supporter of the project in many ways. His keen interest in great golf courses and his desire to help in any way he could were much admired by all concerned. God Bless.

My deepest sympathy to Bill’s family. It seems like yesterday that we were all together @ LPSS. I cannot believe that this has taken place.

A communal thank you to all who have posted messages. Bill’s passing was very sudden; although he had not been well for several years, he battled on gamely as only he could.
Though he will be missed, he certainly chose the best available exit.
