Passed away peacefully at The Meadows LTC facility in Ancaster, Ontario on Tuesday, March 7, 2017 in her 90th year. Kit left us to be reunited with the love of her life, Melvin (Mel) after 9 years & 37 days apart. Kit leaves to mourn, her children, Carol-Anne (Ken Lawrence), Wesley (Jahn) Colling, Sandy (Don Freeman) and Bonnie (Scott McCoy). Kit was delighted to be “Granny” to Kevin & Robert (Julie) Fox, Geoff (Jaclyn) Colling & Rochelle (Kyle) McLean, Vicky (Brad) Freeman & Kelly (Rob) Peck and Amy (Ryan) Taylor & Sean (Amanda) McCoy. She was also Great-Granny to 14 great-grandchildren ranging in age from 12 years to 2 months. Kit was predeceased by her parents Fred & Kay Layfield & brothers Tony & John, all of Ancaster. Kit is survived by her sisters Alice (Trevor) Camp of Ancaster & Betty (Ken) McBride & Pat McElhill of the UK and numerous nieces and nephews. Kit was born in Auckland, New Zealand & grew up in Darlington, County Durham, England. Kit was an accomplished dancer, having trained from an early age, and at the age of 16, ran 2 dance studios in Darlington, teaching ballet, tap, jazz & ballroom dancing. It was on a blind date, that she met her husband to be, Melvin, who was serving with the RCAF on an airfield just outside of Darlington. They were married in Burlington, Ontario on Dec. 14, 1946 and spent 43 happy years living on Fiddler’s Green Road in Ancaster. Kit & Mel were founding members of Marshall Memorial United Church, and Kit was very active in the church community. She was also a lifetime member of the Ancaster Horticultural Society and proud Trillium award winner, a volunteer at Fieldcote Museum, member of the Ancaster Senior Achievement Centre and avid bowler. When the sad day came that she had to leave her house in Ancaster, she & Mel became enthusiastic members of the Villages of Glancaster community, where Kit taught many of her neighbors how to tap dance. Mel & Kit then moved to Rushdale, assisted living home, and after Mel`s passing, Kit moved to AMICA at Dundas and became a member of St. Paul`s United Church. Finally she returned once more to Ancaster and spent the last 3 years at The Meadows Long Term Care Facility. Kit loved Canada, she was the most patriotic person we knew. She loved the family that she married into and she loved Ancaster. She had a long and happy life in her adopted country. Visitation will take place on Monday, March 13th from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Turner Family Funeral Home, 53 Main St., Dundas. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 14th at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul`s United Church, 29 Park Street, Dundas. A private interment will take place at Lowville United Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Paul`s United Church or to the charity of your choice would be appreciated. The family would like to thank the staff at The Meadows for their kindness and compassion in caring for our mother & grandmother these past 3 years.

I always liked to visit with Auntie Kit. She would take the time to listen and engage you in a conversation. I loved her accent and her gentle way. I was saddened to hear of her passing. I know Carol-Anne, Wes, Sandy, and Bonnie-lynn will miss her greatly. The original neighbors are almost all gone now, but not the memories of the happy time we all had being cared for by out Aunties. Our loss will be heavens treasure as I am sure she has begun sharing her wonderful positive attitude and sunshine smile to all of the Angels that have gone before her. Mitochondrial DNA comes only from the mother, who inherited hers from her mother and so forth.
Mitochondrial are the engines of life, so with two radiant fireballs like Kay Layfield and Kitty it is not surprising that Wes, Carol-Anne,Sandy, and Bonnie-lynn turned out to be so special.
Kitty brought four children into this world, all from the same love but wholly unique and individual.
Mel and Kitty always seemed to be very much in love all through the years like they were still on their honeymoon.
I always got the impression that my Uncle Mel and Auntie Kitty deeply respected and truly loved each other.
That love of family resonated throughout the years and that love will never die.
It is that love that we celebrate and deeply honor with Kitty’s passing.
It is that love that shines on, and it is that love we carry in our hearts as eternity unfolds.
Shine on, shine on, and shine on some more Kitty.
It is with such great sadness I learned of Aunty Kit’s passing. Just last summer I learned she was at the same residence as Mom and went to see her. We would sit and chat about “the old times”. Still the same sweet person I shall always remember. I am so upset that the weather is not cooperating tonight as I was planning to bring Mom for one last visit to say farewell to one of the last neighbours with whom we shall remember for such wonderful times we shared growing up. My thoughts are with all of you at this sad time and I shall miss seeing all of you. Give her one last kiss and hug for me.
I’ve just learned of Kit’s passing and send my sincere condolences to all the Colling family. Over the years, Kit (along with Mel) was the dearest, most helpful force in my life as far as the plant world is concerned.

Hi Carol-anne,Wes, Sandy and Bonnie Lynne. I just learned now in a google search the your mom and my Aunt Kit passed away this spring. Although I had not seen Auntie for some time? I will always remember her smiles and warm greetings awaiting everyone. My condolences to your families. I visit Lowvill cemetery often and will stop and prayer with Kitty next visit.
